Well said. What I don't get is post after post on this site, people lamenting how irresponsible youth are today, bad parenting, etc. Here we have an example of kids doing something really stupid with tragic consequences, and people are saying but it's not their fault, it's the victims fault. I'm sure they did not mean for it to happen....but it did. I don't think they need to be sentenced to life in prison, but what is wrong with them standing up and accepting responsibility for their actions. Our society has become about making excuses for everything. Parents make excuses for their kids behavior, and kids make excuses for the outcomes of their actions. They did something wrong and stupid, and they are going to have to wake up every day knowing someone died because of it. They own this, not the victim. Don't make any more excuses for them.

Have you read the reports or seen any of the TV spots? In the state of New Jersey the law says the penalty for invasion of privacy can be as high as five years in prison.

Well, I don't know how you'd feel about it, but if someone were to film me during a sexual encounter without either my knowledge or consent, I would consider it to be a sexual assault.
YOu really need to have some understanding of law before you make any comments , if you want people to take you seriously.

YOu want filming someone to be an assault, when a fault, by nature, requires an unwanted or offensive TOUCHING?

What don't you get about the fact the calls for jail and/or community service are coming because of the invasion of privacy, not because the boy killed himself? If Tyler had chosen instead to report his roommate to the police for that invasion of privacy, YES, I'd still be calling for the roommate and his friend to go to jail! What they did was despicable, even if Tyler hadn't died.

Just to make sure, say if the person secretly filmed was not someone of darling status, in fact, you hated the person/their values.. Say it was a conservative. Would you still want a liberal who filmed a conservative to go to jail? Would your outrage be JUST AS STRONG as it is in this instance?

I agree. Problem is, most people don't have that much imagination and it is my vivid imagination that has had me hurting so much over this (and the other five who have committed suicide since the beginning of the school year).

These sicko perverts who filmed and posted did it with intent, to shame and humiliate the kid. While they could not have predicted the outcome, what was the outcome they expected? I say, that these sick bully's should enjoy the comforts of a prison cell for a year or two..and maybe broaden their sexual experiences.

From what I have read and understand about this incident I would have to say there was a whole lot of bad parenting all the way around.
1. The parents of the idiot who video taped his room mate. Did they not teach their child anything about respecting anothers privacy? How about what it is to be a person with morals or integrety? No they raised a scum bag.
The parents of the suicider. They raised a weak and fragile person.
This is nothing but proof that book smarts is no match for life smarts. It seems that everyday we read about college pranks gone wrong. More to the point we read everyday about yet another case of lousy parents.
Life isn't about fair. Life doesn't care about individual feelings. The boy was gay. He obviously was okay with being gay. He should have and could have handled it like a person of pride and intellegence. Filed a police report and seen to it that his dorm mate was punished. Instead he did what many weak, selfish people do. He committed suicide so that his family would have to deal not only with the video of their son but also a suicide.
What a fine example of a man he was.
The other family. They raised a dirt bag with the morals of a pimp. I wonder are his parents proud of him today??? No doubt he will make a fine politician. But then who would want a politician for a son? Maybe he can use that college education to break into the porn industry?
Some call this a prank. Would those same people call it a prank if someone video taped their wife or daughters in the shower? How about post a video of their daughter having sex? It wasn't a prank. This kid had a problem his room mate or maybe has problems with gay people. He did it because he is a hateful little worm who obviously has always enjoyed complete protection from his parents for his actions. I hope he gets prison time and in turn receives a taste of justice.

The reality is, if he had notk illed himself, there would never have been charges filed. So it relies solely on whther the victim seeks counselling or not to determine if charges are filed?
You don't know that. If he had not killed himself, he may just have filed the charges against his roommate for invasion of privacy. He may have known that such things as the filming and releasing the film without his permission was illegal.
