In a new twist in the fight over Arizona’s immigration law, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Tuesday asked a federal court to disallow foreign governments from joining the U.S. Department of Justice lawsuit to overturn the law.

The move comes in response to a 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling issued Monday, allowing nearly a dozen Latin American countries — Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru and Chile — to submit friend-of-the-court briefs in Justice’s challenge to SB 1070, which Brewer signed into law in April and is considered one of the nation’s toughest immigration-enforcement measures.

“As do many citizens, I find it incredibly offensive that these foreign governments are using our court system to meddle in a domestic legal dispute and to oppose the rule of law,” the Republican governor said in a statement shortly after the state’s motion was filed Tuesday evening.

“What’s even more offensive is that this effort has been supported by the U.S. Department of Justice. American sovereignty begins in the U.S. Constitution and at the border,” she added. “I am confident the 9th Circuit will do the right thing and recognize foreign interference in U.S. legal proceedings and allow the State of Arizona to respond to their brief.”

Friend-of-the-Court briefs have been around for decades, even for foreign flags. Nothing to get excited about. These are only briefs about why the judge should rule in a certain way. My experience: they are usually ignored. It just makes people (or countries, organizations, etc) feel better to allow them to submit them.

I do recognize (as I always have) the 'icky' factor.

Either Jan Brewer doesn't know any better, or she does know better and she's using this turn of events to galvanize her supporters.

There's no need to galvanize. She already has lots of support.

Foreign governments should not be allowed to meddle in our internal affairs, but I don't see this as much more than a plea on how they feel the judge should rule. I don't care what the circumstances, foreign governments should stay out of our courts.

Then again, the Federal Government shouldn't be suing one of its states for passing a law that mirrors federal law.... one the feds refuse to enforce.

With our current ridiculous over-supply of labor and under-supply of jobs, we should have shut down immigration 100% at the beginning of this endless Recession/Depression. American workers will continue to see erosion of wages and loss of benefits until we stop dumping huge numbers of new workers into an already bloated labor pool. This is not a good situation for your children.

Our current Administration refuses to defend our borders, and instead sends our oversized Military (and National Guard) halfway across to world with no mission, goals or purpose. Congress was supposed to be the one to declare war, but previous Presidents started this insane war-mongering and apparently it is very profitable. It should be illegal.

And when a border state tries to at least apply minimal measures to deal with the immigration problem that is destroying them, the Administration sues the State.

It's so ridiculous that, even knowing the idiocy of our government, I can't figure it how they justify it. Unless you take the view that our President sees himself as the Leader of the World, with the charge to spread out the wealth of Americans to everyone else. Then it all starts to make sense.

It's just amicus briefs, they're not "joining" the lawsuit as a party Petitioner/Respondent (or Plaintiff/Defendant)

Though, nations south of the border need to spend less time worrying about Arizona and a bit more time focusing on their own laws. Especially Mexico.

Allowable or not, it speaks volumes that this administration would allow other nations to line up against one of it's own states. And all over laws it should be enforcing in the first place.
We have a rogue and hostile enemy occupying the White House.

This IS big for them. Do you know how much money flows out of the US back to these countries EACH WEEK ?

The illegals are RICH here compared to where they came from and they send money home on a regular basis.
