Some good news for a change. Another important step closer to getting these trapped miners back to the surface.
Rescuers Break Through To Trapped Chilean Miners : NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=130451593&ft=1&f=130451593 - broken link)
October 9, 2010A rescue drill finally punched through to the underground purgatory where 33 miners have been trapped for 66 agonizing days under the Chilean desert. Families and government officials are celebrating the progress, while also acknowledging that there's still a lot of work ahead.
Relatives waiting at "Camp Hope" on the surface waved Chilean flags and shouted with joy as word spread of the breakthrough, and one man frantically rang a bell even before a siren sounded to officially confirm that the escape shaft had reached the miners. They are still several days away from rescue: Engineers must first check the shaft and decide whether to reinforce it before pulling them to the surface.
I am as sure as hell, a few weeks after they are freed, there'll be a movie made about their ordeal. I can't wait. My attitude about South Americans,
has changed dramatically over the months that this portrait in human endurance has been painted. Que courage! I remember thinking about how I would deal
(if I was even able to), with what those men have dealt with, the whole idea sent shivers down my spine. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they all make it
back from that darkened tomb, there in the womb of the earth, to stand once again on the surface and celebrate a glorious rebirth. I hope they all buy a few
lottery tickets, anyone with that kind of luck is a natural winner.
I did hear about this earlier today. Amazing that they survived for so long. Always nice to hear about what should be a successful rescue.
