She was married to him during the confirmation hearings which is why Mrs Thomas cares. But I think that the events Ms Hill describes occurred after Justice Thomas divorced his first wife but before he married his current wife. She was his wife, though, by 1991 when he was nominated to the court. However, Ms Hill had moved on by that time. As a matter of course, the FBI conducted a thorough background check on Justice Thomas, and questioned Ms Hill about her relationship with him. Ms Hill shared what she characterized as his inappropriate behavior, not because she expected to be called to testify at his hearings, but because when you respond to the FBI investigation you are legally required to be truthful and complete in your responses. The FBI's findings during their investigation were dutifully supplied to the bi-partisan committee charged with recommending or not Justice Thomas's confirmation, and the Democrats on that committee called Ms Hill to testify. Two other women who had similar experiences were subpoenaed, but ultimately were not called to testify.

I think that Mrs Thomas may have made this ill-advised phone call because another associate of Justice Thomas's has written a book due to be released, and rumors are that the author validates Ms Hill's story. Mrs Thomas may have hoped that by eliciting an apology from Ms Hill that she would defuse any negative publicity resulting from the publication of the book. Of course, instead she has re-ignited the issue, and drawn even more attention to the book.

Thanks for the info.

Wouldn't the message she so unwisely left for Ms. Hill be considered slander?

It did imply that Hill was lying under oath .

Way deeper. The NY Times ran a story the same day Mrs. Thomas called Ms Hill - coincidence, probably not. Probably an attempt at garnering sympathy in light of a rather disquieting article given her husband's position.

Thank you for the links....no wonder the repubs /teabaggers have quietly dropped out of this thread

From the link:

""""To review: Liberty Central operates as a purely political group; Ginni Thomas goes on Conservative 24/7 TV Fox News to decry our President's tyranny, to advocate against health reform, and to echo right-wing talking points and it was all enabled by the United States Supreme Court when her husband and four other justices endorsed the Citizens United model of political participation. Anita Hill still looks good, while the same can not (ever could have been) be said for Virginia Thomas

Fwiw, Anita Hill took and passed a lie detector test on her testimony at the hearings. Thomas refused. I never doubted a word she said.

Ms. Thomas, on the other hand, is a nutjob and needs psychiatric help.

Oh yes he can

"That's mighty white of you" is a scathing response to a situation in which someone is condescendingly attempting to portray their own actions as incredibly generous and worthy of gratitude, when the reality of the situation is just the opposite.
That is racist.
