General Electric will order "tens of thousands" of electric cars in about a week, the conglomerate's chief executive said Friday.
In a speech in London, CEO Jeffrey Immelt said the purchase would be the largest of its kind in history. But he did not specify exactly how many vehicles GE would buy, nor what brand of electric cars would be included in the order.
They will go with a GM product you watch. GE is just about run by the Obama administration as is GM. This is a trick to ramp up GM stocks and make it look like GM is doing well.
Yeah, lets watch GM totally collapse, that would be cool, then we could have solar powered Humvees we can buy from Korea or Japan. Hell we are already dependent upon Middle East oil and foreign sources of food, why not have our military dependent upon foreign nations too, that makes perfect sense.
Now the Obama administration and the automakers have discovered the secret to making the electric car go — money. The administration plans a $5 billion program of tax credits to buyers and grants and subsidized loans to automakers to get the electric car rolling.................
..........The Obama administration plans to have 1 million electric cars on the roads by 2015. That’s a lot of bribes — excuse us. incentives — to would-be buyers. Between the Cash for Clunkers and the electric car subsidies and its ownership of two carmakers, the motto of the Obama administration may soon be: No Car Buyer Left Behind.
Another program Republicans can de-fund to lower the irresponsible spending! Where are all the liberal posters who complain about corporate welfare? They are curiously silent.
If GE has the foresight to make the switch more power to them. I think this is the direction we all need to move. You want to defund terrorism? stop buying oil from the middle east.
Our economy is held hostage by(not buy.. that is for a purchase)the $75B a month drain on our economy. Pickens has that right and we need to wake up and make a change.
Jimmy Carter tried to get us off foreign oil in the 70's to have Reagan reverse all he did and increase our dependence...
I am please Tesla opened the LA plant and have high hopes for the sedan they are producing. It is a good thing. and a new industry wants to explode... Want new American jobs... invest in the green energies and get the gov to do the same... a few B spent will generate much more in benefits... just like the cash for clunkers. which totally revitalized the car industry. and was a drop in the bucket... best money we ever spent. small investment helped economy, auto industry and jobs...

No one is suggesting that electric cars are not a viable sector in certain populations and that energy independence is not important. However, General Electric has the money to invest in their own fleet, as well as their own financing arm, without the taxpayers funding it. Or, do you support corporate welfare at taxpayer expense as long as it fits your political agenda and with total disregard to the national debt? http://www.ge.com/ar2009/pdf/ge_ar_2009_audited.pdf
edited to add:
Let us pretend that GE only purchases 10K Chevy volts at $41K each. Is it prudent use of taxpayer funds that $410 million be spent so that GE can field a new sales fleet? Really?
