Ah Texas, you have to admire them for their compassion and doing what is "Right".

"Some Republican lawmakers — still reveling in Tuesday’s statewide election sweep — are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program."
Interesting. I hope they do it, and not just talk about it. Give the voters the kind of actions they voted for.

One - but only one - of the reasons a descriptive thread title is nice to have. The link didn't work for me, either, until I went to the NYTimes online and searched for Texas.

I don't have a problem with the NYT, but here's another from the Texas Trib.

I think you will find they are probably not the only state looking at going after things like Social Security and Medicaid. it will be interesting to see how the olders that voted Repug will like the suggestions they are going to get.. Since they are complaining about the lavish spending of the gov then it should be just fine to slash the programs of the gov. Let the ax fall. Can we start on military spending since it is the largest segment of the budget? We can easily trim off $400B, End all war actions, and lets close foreign bases that willcut 1T out of the budget.
Then we can increase the SS withholding and decrease the amount payable..

Consolidate medicare /medicaid, and veterans hospitals, and the healthcare of the politicians under Obamacare. I don't mind national healthcare but it needs to be one not many. and we all get the same.

legalize drugs and tax them. might as well get tax money on the 50B spent.

I think we should unfund homeland security while we are at it.

Your post illustrates quite nicely why cutting government spending has been so difficult and will remain a difficult task.

Everyone wants to cut spending on different things and NEVER want their own share of the pie cut. It's always "Let's cut something else other than my check."

One idea they are toying with is a state funded medical savings account.
There are mandates under Obamacare that the state must meet and fund until 2019. The medicaid program is expanded under Obamacare but not Federally funded so states have to pay.
Texas has estimated $40-$60 billion which it cannot afford.

They are looking at all options to keep the budget in line. Oklahoma is doing the same thing.
Sorry folks..when there is no money then programs have to be cut.

Texas is #2 for medicaid recipients so it is a hefty financial burden.
And we're already facing a shortfall in 2011-2012 which our lawmakers need to deal with in 2011.

How long do you think expanding welfare entitlements with decreasing revenue can go on ?

Texas will be in trouble if we leave all our programs untouched.
Our budget is a 2 year budget and lawmakers only meet every other year.
2011 is when they next meet and work on the new budget.

Cuts will be coming; there's no other choice.
