The building in question is planned to be a Muslim community center, a sort of YMCA (or, I suppose, YMMA). The plans are for it to have fitness facilities (swimming pool, gym, basketball court), a 500-seat auditorium, a restaurant and a cooking school, exhibition space, a library, art studios, a 9/11 memorial--the impudence! the outrage!--and childcare facilities (which no doubt will soon be referred to as a "Manhattan Madrasa"). And it's also going to house a mosque.

But calling the entire building a mosque is a bit like referring to the Empire State Building as a 103-story Walgreens because the pharmacy chain has a store on the ground floor.

It would help to call each thing by its real name.

Well this place didn't get a grant, it merely applied for one according to the OP.

They're very well aware of how divided the public on the issue is. They're adding insult to injury and thoroughly enjoying it.

Whatever you or I may think of it, it is well within their American rights to act accordingly. Burn a Qur'an anyone?

Will the pool be coed, and will women be able to wear western swimwear? Or will they be required to wear burquinis per Sharia?

Will the gym be coed, and will women be able to wear western fitness attire? Or will they be required to cover limbs and head per Sharia?

Do know, don't care, its their building, not mine. Does the NFL allow women players?

Since when is the NFL a religious organization?

If the founders of the Islamic Center intend to observe Sharia within the building, subjecting women to oppressive laws which we do not recognize in the USA, if they receive tax-exempt status on the grounds of being a religious organization, then their application for taxpayer funded grant money should be denied.

I like "burqinis", very clever. I doubt the pool could be co-ed if the women wore normal bathing suits, though. Maybe they'll have male swim time and female swim time.

Can't be going the entirely-covered route, though, since the imam's wife doesn't even cover her hair.
