The homeless problem started up in the 80s, after Reagan became President. And it's been going on now, for over 30 years. Homelessness has continued to increase, since the great recession began over two years ago.
In a wealthy country like America, the homeless problem is a national disgrace. Shouldn't we use our considerable economic resources, to eliminate homelessness once and for all? And what do you think would be the best way, to go about doing so?

So there were no homeless people prior to the 80's? Who knew?

It will not change until the following is eliminated!
Domestic Violence against women and children, untreated mental illnesses, drug/alcohol addictions. As these are the number one contributors and now topped with job/home loss because of the economy.

I agree. The homeless have been around forever. Lots of them after WWII ended (then, as now, a disproportional number of homeless men were veterans). And, of course, during the Great Depression there were many hobo towns, etc (Hoover Towns!).
I hate to burst your bubble..but America is not a wealthy country.
Being homeless is NOT the problem. It's the result of something else.
What is the problem that causes homelessness is the question you should be asking.

So, in other words, it will never be eliminated. You simply cannot eliminate, sadly, domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction or mental illness.
I do think that we need to do a better job of helping veterans who come back from service with all sorts of mental issues.

Well Domestic Violence Can be eliminated through harsher punishment and education. Drug/Alcohol also can be trimmed substantially through treatment and education the mental illness is a bit trickier.

But widespread homelessness started up, mainly in the early 80s.

Actually I believe after the Vietnam war was a big trigger and the hippie movement of the 60's-70's.
