The one country I can think of that deals with both of the above named countries is the place where we buy our Xbox and Playstations from, China.

China is a good example of a country that could in fact seriously hurt us, but we don't treat it like we do Iran or N Korea, namely because they hold massive amounts of our debt, host a large number of American companies using cheap labor to produce trash for the American consumer at cut rate prices. This is one devil we deal with if we want cheap 47" TV sets and NOTHING will stand between an American and a TV set, not even Satan himself.

China, etc... doesn't have to do anything to hurt us. They can just sit back and watch us destroy ourselves from within. And China is itself an old empire (over 6000 years old), they seem to have learnt how empires work from their own experience, I think privately they chuckle at our upstart in their time terms, the US is posturing and chest beating around the world while we proceed to fall on our bare arse financially and politically.

I would ask, have you ever seen a mule pull? If you haven't, let me give you a quick description.

Most of the mule teams in pulls are both bred and trained for pulling, and when harnessed together, "they know" what is coming next. The handler or handlers pull back on their reigns, their muscles tense and their legs twitch and their bodies react in anticipation of pulling the sled. Once the ring drops on the sled and that distinct "clink" sound is heard along with the handler telling them, git git, every fiber in their body is focused on one thing, pull that sled as hard as they can. Now watching this type of event, you will notice the mules almost give you a sense that they enjoy it and like competing, or at least pulling that silly sled down a field. I have no idea what is going through their minds as it may just be habit, but it appears this way.

I liken this anticipation and response to many of the American people wanting to intervene in the foreign affairs of other nations. As recent events in Egypt have shown that many American's would cast aside democratic ideals at the drop of the hat, as long as "they got what they believe is their right to get". Even those who espouse and rail on incessantly about fiscal responsibility, suddenly throw out every principle they every laid claim to, cost be damned, because it is out god given right to do as we please.

So to the first bold, yes, it will not be some horde or enemy at our gates that eventually brings teaches us humility, it will be our own exceptionalism.

As to the second bold, America rarely postures at this juncture in time, we act, and when we aren't acting overtly, you can bet we are acting covertly, as our people demand it, as is evidenced by so many post of late railing against our government for not intervening in the affairs of Egypt.
