I wouldn't go as far as saying Americans are "too intelligent" to vote for Sarah Palin. I would say though, that her political ideologies are not the same as the majority of the American people.
Who cares what Oprah Winfrey says? She earned her fortune on the backs of welfare moms and deadbeats and contributes nothing positive for the country.
Considering the fact that George W. Bush was reelected, I'm not sure that I share Oprah's confidence in the intelligence of the American public.

Life expectancy is higher for individuals in Sweden than in the US. So clearly, they are not doing to shabby caring for their elderly and disabled.
Many Europeans live in habitats that are not comparable to US standards (unless we are looking at urban quarters- such as rowhouses, apts etc). This is no big surprise.
I don't think square footage really has anything to do with life quality if we are comparing the US and Sweden.
Swedes in the US have higher life expectancies, incomes, and educational attainment/test scores than Swedes in Sweden. Not their fault other Americans don't do so well.

More generally, from sources I do have on hand, white Americans have higher high school graduation rates (90% to 71% link, link), median income of whites in the US is almost 50% higher than Swedes (link, link, life expectancy of whites in Minnesota (a crude measure, but on hand) is slightly higher than Swedes (link and see earlier link). From data I've seen in the past, Scandinavian Americans do better than the average for American whites on all these measures, near the top of non-Jewish white ethnicities in the country other than Russian
