It's hard to say. We'd probably have to divide it first into "US" and "International" categories, since some events that matter a lot in the US don't have much global impact, and vice versa.
Then we might want to divide things between "natural occurrences" (like the Haitian earthquake or the Iceland volcano) and "manmade events" (things like wars, riots, or political processes).
Obviously those things overlap, but they are often quite different in character.
Oh, definitely the Tea Party phenomenon and the conservative resurrection resulting in an historic election for the GOP across the USofA.
