A politician poses with a rifle.....Is this considered okay? Is all that matters is it looks cool, and some people like to hunt so its considered "freedom of speech"?
Or is there a limit to sensationalizing the violence which mass media should finally own up to, and try (I know its hard, since all they care about is profit) But, maybe people should raise the bar if they own a network, start thinking about how citizens are affected, how violence yields repercussions for society.
Elie Wiesel-brilliant author and professor, has a humanitarian project on facebook with many insights and hopes for what people can do to make things better.
It depends more on what is said and in what venue. Some mediums are more clearly self expression and thus become a matter of interpretation.... others though such as political statements or speaches are generally a means to inspire or incite action in one form or another. If one is directly attempting to inspire action in some way then I think they need to be far more aware of what they say and how they say it. At the same time though media in general has always been sensationalist and to expect a lack of violence in sensational media is a rather unrealistic expectation and can trend into the realm of censorship or impeding creative expression if taken to far.
Notice how now on CNN they are having alot of earthquakes in Pakistan being televised, etc.....Anderson Cooper wants to reopen cold case files from 50 years ago, but not discusss the psychology of the Tucson tragedy.
