So... would the better solution have been to shoot him? I agree the police are useless at times, but I also fear the trigger-happy Americans who are ready to shoot all who enter. I mean, robbing someone is a horrible thing, but does it warrant killing somebody? I'm assuming he wasn't armed, or he would have shot her during the struggle - right?
Disclaimer: As I said on that other thread, I do still support the right to safely bear arms... I just don't think they should be used in EVERY situation, and some people in this country would shoot a stray dog if it peed on their roses.
She was just being nice as I'm sure she could have hurt
him pretty bad if she wanted to
Why would any criminal take a chance like this when so many people are armed Only the stupid ones will find
out the hard way
I didn't ask if you have the right, I asked if it was worth killing someone over theft...
I answered. Yes. By trying to break into her home; whether it be for burglary or something more nefarious, that criminal was trying to harm her. This was a violent action against her and thus she has the justification to defend herself up to and including killing the perpetuator.

Well, I guess we have different views regarding the value of a human life. I mean, it's one thing if they're armed themselves, or trying to rape or kill you... but in this specific case, I think a gun would only have made things worse. She should get herself a dog - mine has kept criminals from entering in the first place!

This guy was going window to window, door to door, knowing there were people inside. Intent doesn't get much more evil than a home invasion when the criminal knows there are people inside.
Luck and providence were on this woman's side. It could have ended up very much worse indeed, for her and her 8 yr. old daughter & friend.
Tennessee is a gun friendly state. It was this woman's choice not to be armed. After this experience she may change her mindset and her emergency plan to more than just dialing 911 and hoping for her life and the life of her daughter.
This one is very chilling. Especially the much longer version which I can't find anymore, but you can begin to understand how long the police takes to arrive and how much longer it must feel in the mind of the victim.
Caller: "He is crazy, I'm taking the safety off the gun ma'am. He's acting crazy."
911 Operator: "Ok do you have a place you can go inside your house and lock yourself in a room?"
Caller: "I've got a big shotgun I'm not going into a tiny bathroom"
Yet you're willing to kill over an assumption of "the intruder's every intent" - notice the irony.
I don't see the irony. Anyone who comes into my residence uninvited will come out feet first.
