If the idea works I can't see how there would be any breed stock ever. I think you would need DNA from more than one woolly to have that happen. Mating 2 woolly's from the same DNA isn't going to work out well and for very long. So unless there is more DNA, this experiment can only last till that DNA is gone. I suppose with one living woooly you can get more DNA, but mating pairs ares still not a part of the equation.

They would require a mammoth egg and sperm to make a true 100% mammoth. Making a mammoth from only DNA means they will require the egg and sperm from a closely related animal, such as the African elephant. Then they would replace the DNA of the elephant with that of the mammoth and another elephant would be required to bring the embryo to gestation. So at best the off-spring could only be half mammoth and half elephant. Without a mammoth egg and sperm, there can never be a critter that is 100% mammoth.
Other than some scientist angling for an award (and the resulting sinister implications for other species), what's the point in resurrecting the woolly mammoth? Where would such a resurrected species live--it's original habitat is either vanished with the last Ice Age or overrun with colonizing human beings.
