As far as you know, has any State of The Union Rebuttal (SOTU) speech ever contained any major surprise so much so that the media and people around the water cooler the next day were talking about some content in the rebuttal speech more than they were talking about the SOTU? I can't remember a single memorable one as far as content goes. Can you?

When Bill Clinton said that "the era of big government is over," that surprised a lot of people. Not me...anyone with half a brain that knew his background knew that he felt that way.

But the rebuttal? No...not really. It's usually the boiler plate opposition stuff.

The only one I can really think of is Bobby Jindal's one that came off quite poor, and if that was done the same way by someone who wasn't considered a 2012 potential contender as he was at the time, it would have been a non-story.

Bobby Jindal biffed his rebuttal speech. That was a bit of a surprise since he was such a "rising star".

I think this year they may make the rebuttal in front of an audience (of they are smart).
To contrast Obama, I guess it would be an anti-communism message, one of far less spending, tax cuts and shrinking government.
Would any of that be surprising to you?

They had a live audience last year. VA Gov Bob McDonnell spoke in front of Republican members of the VA House of Delegates and State Senate.

That's the only one that comes to mind to me as well.
