Do you think internet porn is too easily available to minors?

Just curious.

Here's the *cough* New York Post's take on it.

http://www.nypost.com/p/news/opinion...CJFGS3ytfeMAqI

In porn, sex is not about making love. The feelings and emotions we normally associate with such an act — connection, empathy, tenderness, caring, affection — are missing. The size of the industry today is staggering. Though reliable numbers are hard to find, the global industry has been estimated to be worth around $96 billion in 2006, with the US market worth approximately $13 billion. Each year, more than 13,000 films are released, and despite their modest budgets, pornography revenues rival those of all the major Hollywood studio films combined. According to Internet Filter Reviews, there are 420 million Internet porn pages, 4.2 million porn websites, and 68 million daily porn search engine requests. A recent study from Optenet, an online security firm, found that approximately 37% of online pages contain pornographic content. Meanwhile, the number of porn sites increased 17% from last year.

Yes, it probably is too available for minors, and adults too for that matter, but government mandates isn't the solution.

If parents don't want their kids looking at it, all they need to do is take control of their own kids and stop it.

Of course, there IS one thing government could step in and do appropriately: Give all porn it's own dot address, such as .porn, so it's not spread all over the place. Make it accessible only by registering with proof of age and the problem will rapidly go away.

Oh, definetly....

All they basically have to do is lie about their age or simply click that link that says "If you are 18 or older you may enter." ... Not that I would know.

Like a bunch of 12 year old boys aren't going to lie about their age so they can see some boobies.

Porn sites needs way better restrictions.

Kids will find porn, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

The problem I see with internet porn is that its not debbie does dallas, playboy, or even penthouse. Its bondage, violent sex, rape, having sex with teachers, you think it, its there.

That scares me as a parent, but I dont want to restrict others for my fear. Its my job as a parent to guide my son, and keep him safe from this kind of stuff until he can make an informed adult decision

That does not really solve the problem, since a lot of porn is going to be located in file sharing websites. People who go through the proof of age process can simply upload to the file sharing site (which has no restrictions), email to others, or find some other way to distribute.

By the way there are a lot of photos/videos that are considered artistic but may contain nudity and such, should this also be blocked?

You're right on both counts, but especially that last one. Much does turn on the definition of porn and we could probably argue about that for decades and still never come to an agreement.

Ultimately, it still comes down to parental responsibility. Anything else would be censorship and once that door is opened, what follows?

At the end of the day, it comes down to simply a matter of freedom. Being free requires us to tolerate things we don't like and porn is one of them. How much liberty are we willing to give up in exchange for being protected from exposure to things we don't like?

The availability of anything on the net comes to the effectiveness of parents. I would control content. For me I would worry more about rotten.com than any porn site.

For me I know kids start exploring theirs and others bodies pretty young... it happens, developing positive self esteem, respect for others and so forth would be my focus so they can understand why a woman tied up and gang raped isn't the "best" choice...

If you create an atmosphere of prohibition you will create one messed up person.... ever meet a preachers daughter? nuff said.

Yes, and I've taken steps to reduce what's available to the kids in my home.

On my network, every DNS request is logged and then forwarded to OpenDNS, which filters out a lot of the garbage on the 'net - not just porn. I have DHCP reservations set up so I know which computer made each request, and firewall rules to keep anyone from using a different DNS server. It doesn't (can't) catch everything, but it does a decent job of catching most of the traffic I don't want on my network.

That setup - plus an occasional reminder that I can and do see everything that happens online in this house - keeps the kids in check.

There are certainly things out there that kids shouldn't be seeing. It's hard to police them all the time, but not only is the technology there to keep them in check, but simple things like not having a PC in their bedroom and not allowing them online unsupervised (with a parent in the same room) can also go a long way in keeping their prying eyes fixed on suitable content.

Give your child their own log in....set those security setting fairly high, you can even have a ADMIN (the parent) pass word to down load stuff.

Then when you child is at school, go see where they have been....make it so they cannot get to the "delete history" tab....

Someone said children will get it...this is kinda like beer and cigarettes...if they want it...they will get it....

But the PARENTS are the responsible one...or SHOULD be anyway...

There are ways to control a child's use of computers. And parents can explain to children about good and bad porn so they are prepared.

There should be no restrictions other than for minors.

And by the way, kids have been looking at porn for decades. No manner of laws will stop it.
