Good - now get the f_ out!

KABUL (AFP) – US Defense Secretary Robert Gates offered a personal apology to President Hamid Karzai Monday for the deaths of nine Afghan children in a NATO air strike which drew fury in Kabul.
"This breaks our heart," Gates told a news conference at the presidential palace in Kabul, as Karzai looked on.
"Not only is their loss a tragedy for their families, it is a setback for our relationship with the Afghan people, whose security is our chief concern."

It makes you wonder why we are there, doesn't it?

If we are there to protect our oil interests (read, corporate America) ...not directly, but indirectly....then we should get out before we kill anyone else on either side.

If we are there to whip a little democracy on the Afghan people, and they genuinely wish us to be there, they ought to be a little more grateful. Perhaps we should save a few lives on both sides and get out.

BUT, make no mistake about it, we need this 'war' for economic reasons. It consumes 'stuff' and it employs some of our least employable citizens. Without the consumption aspect of war, we have bigger domestic problems than we have now.

Either way, i'd like to see us work on our domestic issues and let some of these global hot spots take their natural course without our 'guidance.'

It is about time to leave.

We have no business "Nation Building" in Afghanistan.

We need to get the Afghan security forces to the point where they can stand or least wobble on their own and leave.

The elements of Al-Qaeda are actually in the tribal lands of Pakistan. We are already fighting a covert war there.

The people of the United States don't have the patience, determination or national will for long term counter-insurgency warfare.
