Progressives are more interested in playing political games, and perhaps even forcing a shutdown that many of their leaders apparently believe would work to their party’s advantage politically, rather than addressing the spiraling debt crisis facing the nation.

Things are much different than they were in 1995!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The intelligent people understand that a government shutdown does not mean that grandma doesn’t get her Social Security check and your water gets turned off,
We know it means a final admission that we’re out of money. People went to the polls Nov. 2nd, 2010 saying, "We’re out of money, stop spending it."

The voters now, are much more financially sophisticated and instantaneously informed, then they were in 1995 in the first government shutdown. After two years of failing and flailing, whether it be the spending and bailouts, the failed stimulus, a healthcare plan a majority of Americans still don’t want (remember Nov. 2nd)

It’s going to be very difficult for President Obama to lay blame for the government shutdown at the feet of one party in Congress. It just won’t happen.

Boehner met this afternoon afternoon with the 87 GOP freshmen members in the House, where the negotiations over the budget proposals were expected to be discussed.

I say Boehner is going to call their bluff!!!
Many have his back.

The Senate has voted to not pay members of Congress in the event of a shutdown, Tea folks, like Rep. Duffy R- WI, want to be paid.

That's because you aren't a federal employee, of course you didn't notice it, most people didn't care because it didn't affect them. I find if something doesn't affect one they really don't care, noone looks outside their little world.

Sorry that piece of legislation will never pass, these fools will always get their minimum $174,000, however if they could pass this legislation and the President and members of Congress knew they weren't going to get paid, not only would they have a budget, it would be passed by both the Senate and the House and the President would sign off on it TODAY.

I find as long as ones bottom dollar is not affected, most people don't care about what others are going through. That's the reason you have people yelling "shut it down" their not going to miss their paycheck so why should they care if someone else does.

I would be willing to bet if someone said that SS checks, food stamps and welfare benefits were going to come to a complete halt on April 9th more people would be complaining.

This is a squabble over the 2011 fiscal year which started October 2010. Another six months, and we'll be looking for he 2012 fiscal year budget. It would be interesting if we got through the entire year without a budget.

No shutdown is needed, since we're already well in the red with all the spending. If the dems are so committed to having a budget that they are willing to shut down the government, then let's see that same commitment to stick to the budget once it's in place.

Besides, if they're so committed, they should have had one in place in October of last year. They were willing to go on spending without a budget, so they can easily keep the government "open" without a budget. After all, it has been runnning for six months already without the budget and they want us to believe there's a major crisis now?

It's running but even worse than usual. If you don't work inside the government, you can't see how functioning on a CRA impacts the daily work. It is good and it's not good to operate this way.

Let's be honest and admit Congress is full of mostly hugely wealthy people so none of them are going to be in much trouble if they miss a few pay checks. Your claims just don't pass the basic smell test for believability. Besides Congress wrote the law so even if they shut down the government (essentially refusing to do their jobs and having a partisan tantrum instead) then Congressmen still get paid. They always make sure they get paid.

You do understand that there have been years that we have had no budget, they just did CR's all year long?
