This is an interesting article that explains why conservatives hate High-Speed Rail. The only argument they have is that rail costs more than highways do. That argument got debunked. Conservatives just don't like to see progression. If we were in the cavemen era, they would not want to build infrastructure. They would want us to continue living in caves without lights and be uncivilized. Conservatives just hate fun and new ideas.

I didn't read it, but the answer seems obvious.

High speed rail benefits urban areas that vote Democrat, not rural, conservative areas that vote Republican. Most of the HSR proposals are located in the bluest areas of blue states. If I live in Nowhere, Alabama, why would I want the USG to spend billions on high speed rail, in some other state, that I would never use?

Case closed.

High-Speed Rail is cool, but let's be honest : it's just a gift of Democrats to their urban constituents and a big **** to the suburban residents.
I'm ok about light rail and green buses, but High Speed Rail ? Just in California and Northeast

Very true, horse and buggy is too progressive in the eyes of many conservatives.

Right, but France is about 3x more densely urbanized than the U.S., it has good local mass transit across the nation, and has its rail system interconnected with its neighbors, who are the same way.

None of that is true in the US. It might make sense to connect DC to Boston, but that's a small portion of the U.S., in terms of political representation (which is what you need if you want federal $$$)

Rail in rural areas, not High Speed Rail.
And don't be so arrogant :
The USA is seventeen fold larger than France, the HSR would be extremly costly, in France costs are not so high because it's smaller.Same thing for Japan.

Density is too low in the US for that and the country too large, same thing for Russia (you imagine HSR linking Moscow to Vladivostok ????????????? )

like most things, conservatives only hate high-speed rail because they hear that liberals like it. As usual, no logic or reason in the thought process.
Most liberals like it not necessarily because they are liberal, but because they may have traveled somewhere where they've experienced it first-hand, and seen how efficient and convenient it is.

I'm not sure if there is a conservative support for regional rail service either but this thread is about HSR.

The country you live in (France) has HSR that tends to be the benchmark of the world. In fact, I just heard that the French (and the Japanese) are competing for development of HSR in India. They're in a position to benefit from it. OTOH, we're still stuck in the 1950s mentality here in the USA.

And whether in France or India or Japan or China or in the USA, HSR would serve not long distance but 3-5 hour trips which make sense in a lot of regions in the USA. I'm driving to Houston this afternoon, would much rather prefer taking such a train. Having been on the Eurostar and ICE, I see the value and sensibility. What stops the conservatives, again? That they won't serve rural areas? Never seen that excuse made for airline industry.
