Actually as somebody from Miami I can tell you that Alvarez can't raise "property taxes" in Miami Dade county. That job falls to the property appraiser's office & he really had nothing to do with that. His downfall came from his Authoratarian style since he was head of the Miami Dade Police Department and his cronyism. He hired a bunch of his friends from the police department he used to work for! He had become very unpopular a long time before the tax issue.
"Alvarez came under criticism last year when Miami-Dade, saddled with record high 12 percent unemployment and the same budget deficits faced by many local and state governments, introduced a property tax increase to help fund vital services including police and public schools."
And the libs seem to think WI taxpayers, also facing a massive budget deficit, want their property tax bills to increase?
The problem in Miami-Dade (Broward) is we pay more in taxes to support the rest of the state. Our taxes has became the cash cow for Florida. Should we stand by and see our money go elsewhere? We also have a larger burden of the "housing boom" disaster. Florida is different , to say the least, than many of our states, and should be looked at in the light of the current situation, we need leaders to stand up for our local rights and get us our fair share. We need leaders that will go to Tallahassee and say "no more".
Miami-Dade County voters recalled their Mayor ( who increased public union pay) Carlos Alvarez Yesterday.
Alvarez easily won re-election in 2008 as mayor of Miami-Dade, the county of 2.5 million residents that includes the city of Miami. But a recall effort gained momentum last fall when he agreed to a budget that raised the county's property taxes while increasing pay to unionized public employees.

Wisconsin is the same way. Property taxes are redistributed throughout the state. Higher property value areas pay higher taxes, and some of that is stripped from the local governments and redistributed to lower property value areas.
People could have forgiven Alvarez for the tax increase, if he had not raised his and his staffs' salaries at the same time. If people are asked to dig deeper, then it should be asked of everybody.

But his staff are public employees. Unions are DEMANDING that public employees keep getting higher salaries and benefits increases. Look at how outraged the WI public unions are when the taxpayers vote someone in to limit that.
