The various guv run urban commuter rail systems are mostly broke as well.
The people have voted, they prefer cars and planes.
That's plain silly. The Car companies ripped up electric trolleys all over the USA 100+ years ago - and said we should instead use these new devices they would build called "busses".
They lobbied from day one for TAXPAYERS to build roads - this was Carl Fischers big thing (the creator of the Indy 500 and founder of Miami Beach, etc.).
I am forced to drive and take planes when I do not want to. Sure, there are times driving is best - and there are time air travel is great.
Your point is foolish. Tell you what. What do you think will happen if we take 1,000 Americans to Europe and have them do some driving, some air travel and some trips on the HSR? I'll bet they don't "vote" against the rail.
We were born into this mess - and it is terribly inefficient in both energy and time (and pollution). Instead of bring productive (working or reading the paper on a fast train) we are sitting in traffic polluting. Or crashing - MILLIONS of dead and many 10's of millions seriously injured in my lifetime. A Carnage - ask anyone in rescue or law enforcement.
We didn't vote for it. The car and oil industry did.

The people"voted" for auto-centricity between 50 and 70 years ago. Private rail couldn't compete with govt. roads. So now, they are all subsidized.
Unfortunately, we've "painted ourselves into a corner" by making our infrastructure so auto-centric, making it very expensive to expand our passenger rail network.

Car companies didn't rip up trolley lines, people stopped riding them. Im for ending all transportation subsidies, but even if we did, Ill bet you rail would still lose out. Why are all the US guv run systems broke if its such a great idea?

There shouldn't be a "our rail network". Transportation systems should be private and run for profit.
The HSR advocacy is going to get a chance to prove its point, but it might take a while.

Construction began in 2015. Completion of the first leg from Merced to Bakersfield was expected in 2019. A federal report estimates completion of this leg in 2024. Completion of Phase 1, San Francisco to Los Angeles is expected in 2029. Phase 2 extensions to Sacramento and San Diego are expected after that.
Sorry to disappoint, but this is the nature of all heavy infrastructural construction.

It took almost 40 years to complete the interstate highway, right?
