Nonsense. They've given up one concession after another over the last 30 years, and it's still NEVER enough.

And like Jazzy said, most of this country isn't even unionized, and yet they keep on offshoring jobs. Face it, until we're all willing to work for Mexican wages, it'll never be enough to satisfy the fat cats.

Come on Lib's hard to argue with facts, just like the most dangerous cities in this country are ALL run exclusively by Democrats!
So, New York, Boston, Chicago, and Minneapolis are dying?

I think you're confused - or just so biased that you can't see reality. It's not the political party that makes a city safe or unsafe; it's the type of people who live there.

So simple-minded, some of you are....

True - but the decline began decades ago. In the case of UAW jobs, they have been leaving for Ohio, Tennessee, Alabama, etc. for twenty years. The lifetime cost of UAW labor is the primary reason automakers built NEW plants elsewhere in non-union states.

Possibly true. Some of those jobs end up in places like Germany or Scandinavia...highly unionized and with much higher wages on the shop floor -but with the costs of health care and pensions taxed out of those high wages, rather than crushing the employers.

Regardless of Detroit, I think cities as such are always rather liberal places. The younger and more educated the population, the more liberal. College towns are also much more liberal than the surrounding areas, just think of Bloomington, Indiana.
With Detroit there is kind of a vicious circle. The city itself has a lot of crime and a bad reputation, so people move away if they can afford to, which in turn increases the problems for those left behind.

I doubt it has as much to do with Politics as it does the absolutely terrible weather in that part of the world.

Exactly I could pick out a "Red" city with high unemployment crime, decreasing population etc. and just flip the scenario.

What???

Firstly, people rarely migrate because of weather, or politics for that matter. Migration is nearly always due to economic reasons.

Secondly, what absolutely terrible weather? We have a generally mild four-season climate. It gets a little hot in the Summer but usually not bad and better than most of the U.S. The reverse is true for Winter. Some cold days and some snow but nothing extreme and better than places like Chicago or Cleveland. Aside from the rare tornado, there are no natural disasters to be concerned about. Spring and Fall are beautiful.

Thirdly, it is largely the same weather that Detroit has had for its 300+ years of existence. If anything a little milder in the Winter than it used to be. People wouldn't just start moving away now because of the weather.

Actually it work out pretty good.

Stats courtesy of the U.S Census Bureau:

Poverty Reduction during the Kennedy-Johnson Administration
Americans Below The Poverty Level
1961 - 39.628 million 1968 - 25.389 million decrease 35.93%

Overall Population Growth
1961 - 181.277 million 1968 - 197.628 million increase 9.02%

During the Kennedy-Johnson Administration poverty DECREASED about four times faster than the population grew.

The era between 1961 and 1969 saw the greatest reduction of Americans living below the poverty line based on presidential administions of any period for a two term presidential period in the last 50 years.

Constrast that to the administration of Georoge W. Bush Jr.

Americans Below The Poverty Level
2001 - 32.907 million 2008 - 39.829 million - increase 21.04%

Overall Population Growth
2001 - 281.475 million 2008 - 301.041 million - increase 6.95%

During the Bush 43 Administration poverty INCREASED three times faster than rate of population growth.

Poverty during the Bush 43 administraton increased at the highest rate of any two term presidentital administration during the last 50 years.
