Yep...I think even Fox would air those points as facts...we've just known Newt for too long to buy his schtick. And really..."Newt?" It's enough to make one buy into the "lizard people" theory.

Newt is too beltway for my taste. He started something good with the Contract With America, then he became inside the beltway and gasps at other conservatives suggesting we have a balanced budget amendment.

I think Newt would not be my favorite candidate.

So in making what seems like a dumb statement, he's really speaking to the low information segment, who vote in droves, and who lap things like that up.
Today's "left" is anything Left Of Limbaugh (L.O.L.), a Fox/Limbaugh invention which includes most of America, including moderates. No way is Limbaugh the center as he professes. He is the mouthpiece for corporate oligarchy (that is fascism).
He rants against "government" (democracy) with no mention of corporate malfeasance. He has convinced low-info types, who don't even know what fascism is, to embrace it. Gingrich is in with this bunch, looking out for No.1.
In the 1950s this country had a legitimate Communist Party with real candidates . Has anyone heard of them lately? A real Left includes some socialist party. So we now have only the Republicans (Plutocrats), the Dems (Republican Lite), and the centrist but nonviable Greens.

Intellectual compared to who? Palin, Trump, Bachman, then the answer is YES.

Intellectual compared to Friedman or Buckley, no.

Calling Newt Gingrich intellectual is like calling Glenn Beck the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge.
