Suppose that every day, ten men meet at their favorite coffee shop for lattes, espressos, and the occassional muffin, and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.

So, that’s what they decided to do.....

Yeah, but the first four guys didn't have enough to buy the coffee in the first place.

The next four guys are just making ends meet.

And the second to last guy is managing the coffee farm.

And the last guy owns the coffee farm, the coffee shop, the cups, and the seats you are sitting on.

And here I was thinking this thread would be about legalizing marijuana.

Not quite accurate. The example considers income tax only. Add in FICA and only two pay nothing. Can anyone recalculate?

Well that was just off the top of my head, but you know what I meant.

When you make more money, you pay more taxes. Why some folks can't get that in their head, I can't understand.

And yeah, the poorest guys do pay taxes, sales tax, fuel tax, social security and medicare taxes, etc.

Incredible, I'm trying to figure out where the problem with that economic breakdown is... After all, the way I hear it, the last guy shouldn't mind, considering, if he didn't pay the taxes he would give the money to a private charity to help out the first 4 guys... At least that's the way all the conservatives tell me the story.

Exactly. People, like GE (remember, corporations are considered naturalized people), are always picking up the tab for the little people.

Its time for the little guys to step up to the plate and pay their dues and stop being lazy freeloaders.

The story comes up short in that all of the coffee drinkers are drinking the same size coffee. The wealthier man has more coffee because he can afford to have more coffee. The ones who are getting their coffee for free are only getting a small amount. If the wealthy man takes his cash AND his consumption away; possibly the others can afford their cups if they themselves don't add to their consumption.

idk, just a thought.

Maybe the first four men have jobs, but because inflation has gotten so crazy you can't get a family of three to survive on 30,000 dollars a year?

Fair tax is to complicated (went over this in other threads), flat tax, with a 20K no tax limit for each and every American.

Ok, maybe they do have jobs. But they are getting coffee. It's not a need. If they can't afford it; they shouldn't expect to have it "just because".
