Murdoch did'nt give up the editor who was in charge while the phone hacking was going on.
In fact the editor of the News or the World, Andy Coulson, become the press officer to the Conservative party, but he resigned when further phone hacking allegations involving him, were released by the media. Turns out he was well aware of what was going on, and if he knew what was going on, you can bet your life Murdoch did.

I highly doubt that. Murdoch has a lot of business operations going on around the world, I don't think he cares much for a little country like the UK, especially if 2 low level employees were found out and were voluntarily given up. Of course Mr Murdoch does'nt care about a little country like the UK, that's why he is currently trying to buy the British broadcaster BskyB for $10.7 billion.
