Who would've thought that it would be the French to teach us this lesson?

Actually they gave us the statue of liberty so it's not a far cry. They are eloquent in their pursuit of democracy albeit somewhat chaotic or "French"...at least they try. Can't say the same for our so called leaders now.

Not sure this is being done in the pursuit of liberty...

Why blame our leaders? You should blame our Constitution, because this kind of ban would be legally problematic in this country. France doesn't have First Amendment...

Default France veil ban goes into law today

Outrageous and totally unacceptable. This is religious persection, racism and xenophobia all rolled up in one.

YouTube - Defying France's full veil ban

Er, so does this mean brides can't wear veils either?

Almost as bad as the kids suspended for wearing shirts with US flags so as not to upset the illegals attending class.

Liberty isn't the only policy underlying the Constitution...if I remember correctly, the policy behind this ban was that this kind of clothing raised public safety concerns. While I'd concede that a ban like this would be much less likely to occur in the US, I wouldn't go so far as to rule it out.

About WHAT?

They can do what they like in France, but it would be legally impossible to enforce such a general ban in the US.

It's contrary to the letter and spirit of the First Amendment.

Public safety can be a good reason to ban them in certain times and places - like when posing for your driver's license photo - but a general ban is pretty much contrary to the highest of our ideals regarding free expression.

The fact that this targets Muslims doesn't change anything.
