Even costs of community colleges are going up. In fact many quality community colleges are as expensive as some third rate private and public universities. And if you get into any of the more focused career paths like nursing are even more expensive.
It's sad to see so many young people falling for this high education bullsheet. Putting themselves into debt to the tune of thousands when there are zero jobs, zero guarantees, zero returns on investment, all the while the business and racket that is higher education is making BILLIONS suckering students into going as if college is the ONLY opportunity in life nowadays to make a living. If you're not pushing papers and punching numbers in a computer screen and wearing a suit and sipping Starbuck's till 11 am while chatting by the water cooler you're not "educated". God forbid American kids learn how to fix cars, do HVAC or actually get their hands dirty to earn a living anymore. EEEEKKKKK! !! That's SO blue collar!
This is exactly what the bankers and government have wanted. Create a huge debt ridden voting populace that will forever be in need of corporate and government welfare while they are unemployed and destitute. By destroying factories and good paying middle class factory jobs they have created a huge bottleneck of potential worker bees willing to sacrifice their soul to stand in line to obtain a piece of paper for a pat on the back by the corporate lackeys that dictate what they do and for what "salary" they do it. Millions of students competing to get into college paying thousands knowing full well there are no jobs at the end of the tunnel..............LOL.........even Charles Ponzi would be proud.
Since the government took over student loans one can get "free" money to go to school and live a decent lifestyle while going to school and not even have to work.
Basically anyone that is breathing and registered for a class can get "free" government money and not have to pay it back for 4-5 years.
The banks were a tad bit more conservative regarding how much money they gave out to students via loans.
Bring the cost down . Why does it cost so much ? People should go to schools they can afford . Work days , learn at night . This is a problem common sense can fix .
So poor smart kids should go to poor colleges and get a poor education while rich dumb kids should receive a top flight education they will never take advantage of???
How about we base educational futures on capacity instead of social and financial status. We as a country need to be investing in the brightest minds.

What if there were NO student loans ? You betcha costs would come down else schools all over the country would be shutting down for lack of paying students. And parents would think twice how much they could borrow since they would have to take out a personal loan. That's how it used to work.
The poor made it on scholarships and work-study programs.
Grades counted..now it's the ability to fill in the FAFSA form.
But we threw it all under the bus for "free government money". Now live with the skyrocketing costs because your benevolent government will just let you borrow that much more.

She digitizes old documents as one self employment job. She grades papers and even lectures at times. She has dozen or more fill in jobs when she has time. She has been struggling like that for years. Hardly the carefree life you describe.

Oh but it is if you just go to the local CC.
I would agree with you that advanced degrees cost more and universities cost more.
But at the CC level any and all can get $5K or more a year. The $5K is if you are not economically challenged.
It's sort of like an Economy of Scale. You might be able to educate 10,000 students per year at a cost of $3,000 per student.
How much does it cost to educate 30,000 students? Still $3,000 per student right? That is not logical, and far from reality. You can look at the Social Security report. As the number of people receiving benefits increases, the cost to administer the program increases. Same with health care. You have idiots saying, "Norway has 'free' health care" yeah, and Norway only has 5 Million people, not 308 Million like the US has.

All good except for it being the complete opposite of what you said. Economies of scale like packing a large auditorium makes it cheaper, not more expensive. Does it cost more to make a course plan or a text book or to make copies of it? At some point the marginal return will diminish, but in general education is a capital affair not a natural monopoly like the pass at Thermopylae.
Its also appalling that you would compare social security which is transfer payment to training the future workforce. That's like saying bags of seed corn are as expensive a bottle of bourbon.
The reason why college costs are rising is because the seat is going to the highest bidder who now has the option to finance it with the next 40 years of future wages instead of simply upping the requirement of academic excellence.
