I do not mean to imply that this country will resemble.....oh say a place like Zimbabwe in 10 years. But, I think that more and more areas of this once fine county will resemble places like Detroit, Newark or other high crime/high poverty cities.

I define a "failed country" as a country that does not move forward on it's many pressing issues( for some of the reasons listed below (to name a few):

Cannot solve massive financial problems.
Having a 2 party oligarchy that will not work together to solve problems for the good of the country.
A very inflexible/spoiled citizenry who cannot handle change, even if it means financial disaster for the future generations.

These are just a few reasons I feel this country is a failure.

IF YOU AGREE, WHO IS AT FAULT, THE DEMOCRATS, THE REPUBLICANS OR SOMETHING/SOMEONE ELSE.
Umm, how about both parties:

1) Deficit spending by both parties on the state and Federal level.

2) The increase in social programs with mixed results at best.

3) A number of long-term wars (Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan) with no clear definitions of victory or an exit strategy.

4) A number of regulations that make doing business for both small businesses and large manufacturing to do business within the US.

5) Failure of local, state, and Federal government to invest enough money in infrastructure, preferring to spend the money on social experiments (social programs, War on Drugs, etc.) and pork barrel projects.

Don't you also fall into that category? You don't seem any different to me.

You do not see the problem IT MAY BE that we have over 40% of the eligible working populus PAYING NO FEDERAL INCOME TAXES?????
Ask me nicely about how I think taxation should work in this country, and I might dignify someone like you with an answer.

You are probably right. If we enacted harsh penalties for corruption it would no doubt be used in a partisan manner.

Both parties are at fault. The public is at fault to. To hear reasons on why people vote for someone blows my mind. He is not a good candidate because he smoked weed. I voted because its time for a black president. Ill go out on a limb and say that most people who vote dont really read up on who they are voting for.

As for corporations, they play a role. I dont have the numbers, but the logic is here. The numbers can be found. CEO's today get pay "blank" % more now then they did 20 years ago. (its a huge %!!!)
Employees today make "blank" % more now then they did 20 years ago. (its not even close to what CEO's %)

Who really need an extra 5 million dollars a year on top of their 20 million dollars? They get those added bonus for outsourcing. Just BS all together.

Yes, our county has failed. I sometimes wish we did not bring children into this world. The mess that we are leaving to them is embarrassing. Our population in growing, our debt is growing, our government is growing, our taxes are going up, inflation, and wages are not rocketing up like everything else... yeah, we are screwed!

I have no problems with charter schools, it is more the effort by the student that is lagging....in my opinion.

Not valuing learning is a problem that starts with the parents and is picked up by the kids.
Presuming you're white and American - your ancestors probably did not value education when they first came to American shores.

Really, study modernity and who invented most of it.....white europeans. Do you know how many europeans toiled away to come up with discoveries, inventions, innovations, advanced forms of government........these were educated people of their times....nice try.

The only reason I did not provide MORE information is that I was under the assumption that most Americans know the story of how their ancestors came from cultures that did not value education and became educated as part of the Americanization process. If anything, those societies valued education even less than any society today. The schools made the kids.

Well times have changed, it was largely an agrarian society where sweat of the brow type work was the order of the day. And yes, you had to have a ability to learn to be a good farmer or blacksmith.......just like today........the dregs of society will not make good electronic technicians or plumbers.

The teachers, the administrators, and the structure of the school affect the culture of the kids. Most teachers in the US cannot teach.

Most doofus students do not give a rip about learning!!!!!

Probably because you are one.

Thanks, I coming that a complement!!!!!!!!!!!

Both the kid and the teacher for not motivating the students, as well as the school board who approved a bland history book deliberately written not to offend anyone which creates no interest in the subject matter on the part of the kid. Also blame the way the school system is set up.[/quote]

Laziness, lack of parental concern and nuture, no intellectual curiosity and poor discipline are at the heart of today doofus students. Nice try lib!!!

Haha, you sound just like me, and that is good....a true realist.

The only thing that I could see turning this country around is ammending the constitution in several areas............and.........uh, that is not going to happen. Anything short of ammending the constitution, the crooked politicians know how to get around with their usual flim-flam.

And those people mostly stayed in Europe as they had less of a reason to leave.

MY ancestors were not educated people, they were the **** poor dregs of the slums of Budapest, but they made something out of themselves in the US because the US gave them opportunities that they didn't have in Hungary.

Plenty of white "doofus students" too.
A product of bad teachers and a broken school system.

Politicians of both stripes and their special interests are at fault.

A nation divided cannot stand.

Once we get some real leadership, which I'm afraid is a while off yet, we will begin to start utilizing our own natural resources again.

Our greatest natural resource is our people, IMO.

We'll be okay.

I don't get how people can't see we basically have 2 superficially different forms of dictatorship competing with each other.

Fascist elements:

--Corproations dominate the economy and block competition (especially in areas like health care)

--freedoms taken away in the name of "national security" aka Patrio Act

--the Banks own both parties

Socialist Elements

--Meicare/Medicaid poorly managed. Medical expenses in particular are a black hole with poor results (eg US has one of the highest rates of obesity, low life expectancy for a developed country, etc).

--School system mostly churns out rule following drones (when it turns out decently ecuated people at all. Witness all the people on CD who can't spell words they should have learned in elementary school). The school system is left leaning for the most part. Colleges are overwhelmingly to the left and have almost no viewpoints other than the liberal one, especially in the liberal arts.

--Lots of rules and regulations on economic life that are supposedly well intentioned, but whose real intent is to control people.

Both forms of dictatorship are eating away at our freedom. 2 different masks on the same face.

Ultimately, it's the fault of the citizens for abdicating their responsbilities to the government and other institutions.
