The question is muddled due to the complete switching (and some 1/2 switching) of the parties over the years. I'd vote for "honest abe". I'd DEFINITELY vote for Teddy R. - a progressive (but GOP). Also, it asks "Candidate" - does that mean someone who actually ran....in just a primary, etc.? Of just the last two, one of who got elected?
In modern times - definitely would vote for Biden. With some reservations, I'd have gone for Kasich. Similar dudes in some ways (both in touch with the common person).
Jon Huntsman...in a heartbeat.
(I'm far left by today's standards, BTW).
I'd vote for IKE. I'd vote for JFK, RFK - heck, even McGovern. I might even vote for Romney - in the end it depends on who the opponent is.
Pence scares me a little (or a lot). It's not good, IMHO, that we may end up with him. We know his ethics can't be too high if he puts up with his Boss. Also, he's somewhat of a Fundie - and they truly believe the world is slated to end one day SOON. Such a person has a different worldview than those who use reason and logic to make important decisions or policy.
I would have voted for John McCain in 2000, but not when he had Caribou Barbie on the ticket. Going further back, I'd have voted for Lincoln (even though by today's standards he'd be a Democrat), Teddy Roosevelt because he was a huge environmentalist (another one who would probably be a Democrat today) and Eisenhower. And I could see myself voting for John Huntsman in current times.
Honestly, almost any Republican candidate before the Tea Party loons took over would have been acceptable. Bush Jr. was an exception since he was, quite frankly, completely out of his depth as president. But once the Republican party hitched their wagon to the worst of the extremists and theocratic types, they lost any credibility.
Also, I take issue with the phrase "liberal" in the title, since it somehow implies it is "the left" who may not be centrist enough to support an opposition candidate, when in reality it is the right that has veered hard towards extremism in the past decade or so. Remember that nearly any Republican listed in this thread would be considered not hard right enough to win the Republican primary these days, which is pathetic.
Carter. He was the least offensive when it came to war.
Except his foreign policy advisors were absolute garbage. Zbigniew Brzezinski?
Plus he armed the genocidal Suharto regime in Indonesia.
