The reason why I ask is because one of my black coworkers seems to think that if one black messes up in the eyes of white folks( he values the opinions of whites, apparently) all blacks will be judged the same as the black that has "messed up".
I told him that's a insult to blacks and whites to say that. He thinks whites are so narrow minded that they cannot distingish between individual behavior and group behavior. Also, as a black person it's an insult to me because he seems to think that I must "act a certain way" in front of whites in order to get their "approval"......
He goes on to say: As blacks, "we must stick together" and than says. "whites stick together, blah, blah, blah......"
I said: Whites stick together no more than blacks do. Don't believe everything you see and hear on TV or read.
Poor whites and affluent or middle class whites dislike eachother the same as poor and affluent or middle class blacks dislike eachother.
I call it the "Grass Is Greener" syndrone. People always seem to think the next guy has it better than they do. Hence my black coworker making is dumb remarks.......
Most people are to busy thinking about themselves to be thinking about sticking together with someone else.
I don't think he's an idiot because I happen to have the same mindset. I make it a priority of mine to act like I have some sense when I'm out in public because I don't want to have any negative stereotypes and biases added on to what society perceives my race already as. There is no need for anyone to sit here on this forum and act politically correct as if these stereotypes don't exist and aren't ingrained into people's brains through Hollywood, BET, and other media. I'm black but I'm not gonna be PC. A alot of black people that come out of the ghetto, act foolish as hell in public. They will argue and scream at the top of their lungs with everybody who is not going to take it and they will do this to intimidate and demean others. Usually people who aren't black. And that's why alot of people of different races hate blacks. Because of that ignorance. Of course we all know ALL black people aren't like that. But the ones from the ghetto tend to be. And their the ones that Hollywood loves to exploit. That's why once again, I make it a priority not to act foolish in public and I tell my family to act right as well. If their getting loud, I tell them to please quiet down. My mother is someone who is very aggressive and isn't afraid of yelling and screaming at a manager of a company that did her wrong in front of the whole store. She has done it plenty of times. And I am extremely embarrassed each time by her behavior because I don't believe that's a good way to handle conflict and I believe it's that kind of foolishness that makes us (black people) look worse in the eyes of people of different races. I've seen that mess in practically every place I've lived and that's why I made sure to never ever act like that or exhibit behavior that even emulates that.

We are not talking about "acgting like you have some sense".
I said do whites stick together, that's the question. The story was an example. Don't get sidetracked by the story.
You said blacks look bad in the eyes of other races? How do you know? What makes you think those other races even care about how blacks act? Do you think white folks have so much free time that they are spending it thinking about how blacks act? I don't think so.
I don't represent the black race nor will I walk around with the burdens of the entire race on my black. If I see blacks acting a fool that's on them not me. I have no connection to them. They don't represent me. Does Oprah represent blacks? I don't think so. No more the Bill Gates represents whites.

What are you talking about, allen's post was excellent and well formatted.
White people don't beat eachother up for acting black, for the way they talk, or getting an education or not. We don't have a code of conduct, we generally value education, politeness, and those that try to make something of themselves, but we don't harass those that don't. If they want to throw away their future, that's their problem. We don't refer to ourselves as the white community, or think as a group.
People that try to act black, just look like gangsta wannabe's to us, headed in the wrong direction.......we pay them no mind.
White people, as a group, tend not to be cohesive. At all. There's very little solidarity there. I find that the black community has a "stick together" mindset. I don't really care for it because it doesn't allow for the individual to emerge.
I agree with the others--your friend is an idiot. Most whites I know see the "individual"; however, if one tends to participate in group-think behavior, they won't be seen as an individual.

That's funny. Are you my black coworker? You sound just like him......idiotic comments. You're trying to reprsent the white race.
. . . that's a insult to blacks and whites to say that. . . . Whites stick together no more than blacks do. Don't believe everything you see and hear on TV or read. . . . Most people are to busy thinking about themselves to be thinking about sticking together with someone else.
QUESTION-- Do white folks stick together?
No, most whites aren't that sticky. It's white rice that sticks together. LOL
Most people judge individuals for their individual behavior. Your co-worker is paranoid that all whites are racist.
As for your other co-workers: only a racist person would assume that one person's behavior serves as an example for the entire race.
Just be a good person and hope that you will be judged accordingly.
No, we don't. Some white ethnicities living in white ethnic enclaves (Irish, Italian come to mind) might stick together but otherwise we don't "stick together."
