They forget to factor in that the gay couple was going to buy a new car this year, but instead spent the $20k on a wedding. Thus a plus for wedding, yet a decline for car sales..so basically a wash.
But that's not the only situation. Gay couples in New York who wanted to get married, though, would go up to New England, and have their weddings there. Now they can have them locally, which brings more money into the local economy.
How much money it brings in is squishier; you're right on that point.
I don't see any point in going to another state to get married when it's not recognized in your state (or on your taxes, social security, or anything else that legal marriage confers that matters).
Then if you live in the city, and don't only read Gay City News, you know that EVERYTIME anything gets passed, adopted or offered they always claim it's going to bring in millions upon 100's of millions extra.

I truncated this to just address the couple of points here.
First, I am not gay, so I don't read the "Gay City News" or whatever other publication you choose to invent.
All of your "facts" are simply made up out of a lot of talk-radio type hysteria. The fact is -- people spend a LOT more than $20k on weddings and I would be surprised to learn that gay couples spent money on weddings instead of a new car. You are drawing a false parallel.
But I don't want to argue with you, some folks have their minds already made up and don't want to be confused with facts.
I wonder if this is going to present a problem for anyone who's been putting off marriage..."I'd LOVE to get married, baby, but you know it's not legal here, so we'll just have to continue to live together..."
