The office of FLOTUS is a fairly recent development and the budget grows with each new administration. Michelle Obama has a large staff and a multimillion dollar budget which does not include travel and entertainment expenses. She is not an elected official and certainly could chose to reign in expenses, but apparently does not have any desire to do so.
Too bad, she missed a great opportunity to foil her attackers. If she had made an announcement in 2008 that she was going to be frugal and spend her husband's term at home in the White House with her kids and occasional vacations to Camp David in order to save taxpayer $$$ she would have earned a lot of respect from voters including me.
Maybe the next first lady will end this unconstitutional and bipartisan "tradition".

Yeah, I thought we had people on the government payroll for that.

The First Lady can act as a surrogate of the President. I think it was great for the first African-American first family to pay a visit to Africa. The spirit of the trip alone in that context makes the trip worth it.

I'm sure it wasn't you but whinning about a trip like this has been cheapened by people whinning about the Obama's going out to dinner and having BBQ's at the WH etc... It's all become noise about nothing. Our budget is jacked because we spend Waaaaaay too much on defense and refuse to even consider returning the tax rate to Clinton era levels. This trip is much ado about absolutely nothing.

Hillary: State Dept.

“And then there is the work that our embassy team in Rome has been doing,” Clinton said. “Two weeks ago they played an instrumental role in bringing Lady Gaga to Italy for a Euro Pride concert.

“Now as many of you know Lady Gaga is Italian American and a strong supporter of LGBT rights,” said Clinton.
State's waaayyy involved in far tooooo important matters for South Africa diplomacy... or BBQ.

Seeing as the usual gang of idiots tried to argue that the President's trip to India cost $200 million per day, this appears to be an absolute bargain.

Yea right.

I'm also furious that they didn't have my endive salad today at my favorite bistro, in fact I'm incensed. Can't you tell how angry I am?

Not setting a good example, when they preach to us to tighten all of our belts. At a time as this though, when our Nation, is in shambles, and broke should there not be some kind of limits on the trips this family takes. I am not saying that they should not, but gees, who is fitting the bill for these trips?
