Is there any chance that this could be true? Somehow it seems that way to me since nothing is being done to drill in the Gulf or anywhere else that we know oil is residing.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/29/us...aturalgas.html

Quote:
Reports on the prospects of shale natural gas in the United States are "deeply flawed, inaccurate and misleading," a natural gas alliance executive said.

Reports in The New York Times on shale gas in the United States compare the optimism in the emerging energy source to a Ponzi scheme and the so-called dot-com bubble that pushed stock markets to historic highs on speculation surrounding the Internet sector.

Which of your links are we supposed to read? The second one says that the first one is very flawed, but then maybe you didn't read either of them completely through.

Did you notice that all the 'lawmakers' as the NYT calls them were of the same political party? Yep, they were all Democrats and i think i smell something in what the were saying. I wonder if they care at all whether we ever get to be energy independent. It seems they really don't.

I guess you are not one of the 75% of people the link reported. Right??

Why do you think that a majority of Americans have the necessary knowledge to speak with authority on the subject? Such poll, and reliance on, would prove that the founders were wrong in establishing a republic. They should have gone for pure democracy.

Looks like the oil industry advertizing is more effective than they expected.

Oil we don't have enough of to worry about. Its impossible to drill in enough places to meet our demand unless we had oil booms everywhere, and even then we'd run out shortly there after and the price of all of the rig equipment would be more then the gain of oil produced.

OPEC controls 30% of the worlds oil supply, since its a finite resource, they control the price with their production.

Gas, I agree, natural gas should be more utilized for our energy needs. Quit supplying OPEC with the money to fund terrorists.

From the abstracts to the World Fact Book, provided by the Central Intelligence Agency, proven reserves are at 1,349 billions of barrels of oil. Consumption per year at 82.7 million barrels per day equals (.082 billions x 365) 29.93 billion barrels per year; divided into 1,349 billion barrels is 45 years of fossil fuel remaining. With projected consumption of 115 million barrels per day by 2020 it leaves 32 years to depleting existing known supply.

With conventional financing for a car at five to seven years, replacing 280 million vehicles in the United States by years to known depletion is 8.75 million vehicles per year which are not fossil fuel based.

Hydrogen cell, perhaps, is the better alternative long term mass transportation architecture given the need for a renewable resource. Farm equipment, shipping, and rail need consideration also to maintain existing systems to the production and distribution of goods and services.

The United States is a valid random sample of 3% of the global population to the issue.

Free markets work fine, until a crisis. Germany in the 1930's is a testament to political and economic conditions once again ignored, as perhaps the energy conundrum today.

Argumentum ad populum is the logical fallacy that something is true because it is popular.

Quote:
This logical fallacy is often used by children as an excuse for wanting something (everybody's got one), or doing something (everybody's doing it). Despite the juvenile nature of the argument, it is often used by people who should know better, particularly by those who are trying to force other people to their way of thinking.

The New York Times is one of the worst places to get any information from. They have an agenda and will never tell you the truth. The government needs to just get out of the way and let the oil & gas industry figure it out. It will eventually work out but we know that will never happen so just enjoy the gas prices you have now, because I know somehow the government will continue to get in the way and keep screwing things up.
