Why don't they do it?

I have a feeling they don't really care about saving money. They just want to cut the other party's programs so they can spend it on what they think is more important.
Because they believe that drug abuse is are immoral, unless your name is Rush LImbaugh. They would rather cut 9 million from NPR.

And that $45 billion will make how big a dent in the $2.4 trillion Obama wants? How about blowing up the Department of Education? That would save $90 billion right now.

What I would like to see is the use of ALL drugs decriminalized BUT make the sale of drugs a civil offense that requires the forfeiture of the drugs (which will be destroyed) and the proceeds from the sale but no jail time for the seller. The drug money seized can then be used to pay for the treatment of drugs users.

I think this is the right way to approach the problem. Help users get treatment instead of just throwing them in jail. Take the risk premium out of the drug market and the drug gangs/cartels won't be able to make any money.

Can Ron Paul veto everything Congress does? If not he won't be the hero that so many of you seem to think he could be.

Agreed. Why not do both? You still have to start somewhere so why not the War on Drugs?

This Ron Paul cult is getting old. How many times does he have to run before his faithful supporters realize he is simply unelectable?

Enough cuts of $9 million at a time can add up to a pile of money and NPR is surely one of those that needed to be cut.

You don't know many drug addicts do you. If you actually talk with them, you will find that most are desperate for help but they feel they have no where to go for help.
