EVERGLADES CITY —A 63-year-old airboat captain lost his left hand when an alligator bit it off, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The victim’s name is Wallace Weatherholt of Captain Doug's Everglades Tours on State Road 29.
FWC officials said a criminal investigation is pending. It is a second-degree misdemeanor to feed alligators.
OK, so there's nothing particularly political or controversial about this. But I found the reporter's writing to be entertaining (deliberate or not) and thought I'd share.
In July of 2010, an alligator bit off the left hand of Tim Delano, then 18, as he was playing in a swimming hole off Alligator Alley near Everglades Boulevard. Delano later was fitted with a hook and a prosthetic hand but told the Daily News later that year that he mostly avoids using it.
A swimming hole off Alligator Alley, there must be a lot of inbreeding in that area,

I think I've been there/done that tour....about 14 years ago. That tour and a really nasty hotel peddled as a historic landmark were about all that were left of Everglades City at the time. Didn't even stay, just cancelled the rest of the plans there and spent the rest of the weekend on the beach at Marco.
Well, instead of Captain Doug he can now play the role of Captain Hook and write off the medical as a business expense.

Gator tail is yummy and the boots don't look half bad either.

In that area of FL the family tree most resembles the date palm: no branches, few roots, and scattered with trashy nuts and fruits.
Just learn from the captain's mistake and don't use the noodling technique for 'gators.
Agreed. On the job training is a b in that line of work.
I wonder if they will end up with an OSHA fine?
