Here is a brilliant Documentary Series by Adam Curtis - see the link below to one of the series. Its British, sorry to you North Americans, a really good watch.
Its all about how our ideas of freedom are based on specifically on a simple model of human beings as self-seeking, robotic creatures, who constantly plot, scheme and calculate in their own self interest.
About the Market being a better reflection being a better model of humans wants, needs and desires rather than politics which is a weak model for this.
How for example leaders, politicans, CEOs - can only logically lead in their own self interest because they do not know what everyones needs, desire and wants.
How people use Anti depressants to make them more effective - and how this creates a static society where people are happy in their place, and don't strive for better.
Anyway although the theories are perhaps a little extreme.
When you think of the financial crises and corruption everyday around us.
This documentary has changed my outlook - I used to believe that people had a general set of morals, beliefs - but the more you think about we just change our behaviour based on the circumstances.
I don't believe anyone has TRULY has religious beliefs or political beliefs.
From the day your born your constantly changing your behaviour, thoughts, and actions in response to the enviroment, people and challenges you face.
Therefore is no TRUE you, or true opinions - for example I often look at political leaders - and of they were not in Politics they would be in Business or something else - adapting their behaviour as required to gain as much influence, money and power as possible.
I think if were all honest - we have a public face - and our cold, selfish and calculating side instincts which do what it takes to win.
We are born with a sense of family and community. Western schooling retrains us to be self centered individuals competing, instead of cooperating, with all other indiividuals. The result is we are robbed by a group of people trained to operate in their group's class interest. This is why the vwery wealthy are educated in special schools away from the rest of us.
