Yes, Irene herself was more like an aging stripper in denial. But Hurricane Hype--the one presented to us by our friendly local media--had winds in excess of 250mph!

Yep, the media was praying for more damage, but was denied.
I knew this hurricane would be nothing. I'm like you Finn, come from a hurricane prone region and know a thing or two about them. Slept like a baby last night . Hurricanes to us are like earthquakes to Californians.

Well, it's not quite nothing to those of us affected by it, but it wasn't a catastrophic event.
I feel bad for my neighbor. He is a chef at a local restaurant that is in water up to its roof. Looks as if he'll be out of work for a while. I just might lose some food in my fridge if we don't get power back for a couple of days. And my daughter is spending endless hours on hold trying to get through to somebody to get a flight rebooked. She's supposed to be at school in China on Tuesday. Ain't gonna happen.
Can't believe this wind and rain picked up again, though, just an hour ago. I thought it would be all gone by now.

I've lived in FL for over 20 years, and I still prepare every year.
Better safe than sorry, after the hurricanes of 04, I am never going that long without electricity again.
Really made me appreciate the FL pioneers!
Agree with the overhyped media thing (but what don't they overhype?).
We lost power for 24 hours and had quite a bit of first floor water damage; nothing catastophic, more an inconvenience. My relatives on the south shore of LI were less lucky - they have a lovely 4 1/2 feet of water on their street and leaking into their house. They're enterprising folks, though, using their boats to do repairs and ferry in supplies.
32 dead, and over 7 billion in damage so far.......
