Frank - We don't agree on much but I really liked your post. I am reminded of an old USMC chant "This is my rifle, this is my gun. The first is for fighting the other for fun." or something like that.

I firmly (pun intended) believe that the essence of gun control is being able to select a legitimate target and having the skill to hit it with the first shot. I do not see anything sexual in that. I always wondered why Freud considered anything longer than wide a phallic symbol.

It's my understanding that the chant was there to remind recruits of the proper terminology. I've read accounts that during World War Two, recruits that referred to their Garands as anything other than a "rifle" or "M1" would be brought in front of their training platoon, drop their pants, grab their penis, and have to say the chant in front of the whole platoon as punishment until the Drill Instructor was satisfied. I know the chant remained (I still think it is occasionally still used today), but they cleaned it up some time after World War Two and either did it in their underwear (like in Full Metal Jacket) or the whole training platoon would do it together.

Not sure if it is still used.
