The official magazine for Jehovah's Witnesses has described those who leave the church as "mentally diseased", prompting an outcry from former members and insiders concerned about the shunning of those who question official doctrine.

The "mentally diseased" are the ones who would hold unwilling members hostage by enforcing estrangement with loved ones, and this is so very, very wrong. Makes them sound no different or better than Jim Jones.
As with anything in life Just because the Watchtower has an article saying this it shouldn't be reflected upon the followers, they didn't write it, JW's come visit my Mom every week, they have never pushed anything on her, she's not a member or ever attended their church but they come visit and check on her because they are good people and shouldn't be judged just on an article that they did not write.
It's true they really don't bother you unless you expressly show interest.
Thats not true, they came to my door on a Sunday morning.
Now my house is at the end of a dead end road. I live in an elevated house, and the guy knocked on the wooden door, then walked around to the glass doors all the way on the backside of my house to talk to us.
I expressed zilch, zero, nadda interest in talking to him, or anyone from his religious group.

I meant beyond knocking on your door. They don't pressure you into Bible studies and meetings unless you show interest. They do knock on your door but they don't go past step 1 without express interest.
