I would think the "real" tea party--the actual grassroots populists vs. the ones who were bought and sold by the Koch brothers--would absolutely be in support OWS. The root of both is getting rid of corruption and cronyism in government. Both parties are guilty, and we DO need a major overhaul. I think this is a very good thing.

Nightflight--You nailed this!

Why can't people work together on areas where they agree, and agree to disagree where they don't? That's the problem with our country today--it's this all or nothing attitude, and it's destroying us.

I am on the Left, but for the past several months I have come to sympathize with the smaller government crowd. Government has just become a powerful corporate tool. Limiting government limits the ability of big business to rig the playing field to harm small business. I think those of us on the Left are so concerned with how government can be used for good that we forget that it's often used for bad. Certain factions of the Tea Party and the OWS crowd could and should work together.

Let me give you one example of how that works. State governments have a very difficult time suing the banks. The reason why? The federal govt. has promulgated laws to control banks, although they do very little, but since there are federal laws in place, SCOTUS has ruled that federal laws "Occupy the field" and therefore prevent the States from going after or regulating the banks at the state level. This makes it cheaper for the banks as they only have to pay off U.S. Politicians v. having to pay off a majority of reps from each state. This is another example of how banks use the Federal Govt. to work for them, rather than against them.

The common ground between these two movements must be identified and pursued vigorously. The Founders disagreed about a wide range of issues but came together to create a federal government accountable to the people. With that accountability all but gone, we must work to take it back regardless of who works alongside us.
This certainly is the most agreeable thing in this thread. The problem is that those on the far right (teabaggers et al) seem to be much less tolerant of anything different than what their version of a nuclear, christian America is. Perhaps when they want to realise and understand that we are in fact a secular nation, not governed by any religion, and also learn to accept that "Americans" come in all races, colors, creeds, (or no religion at all), sexual orientations, socioeconomic statuses, etc... maybe THEN the two sides will be able to work together.

To me, more people on the left have no problem in working with someone on the far right, than the other way around. I would have no problem standing side by side as an American with someone on the far right, so long as they realise and understand that while we are all Americans, we are also all free individuals, and have the right to our individuality and differences. They must understand that just because someone does not believe as they do, that they are every bit entitled to the same rights, freedoms, protections under the constitution, etc. They don't have to like my religion, or lack of it, nor anything else about me. Hell, they don't even have to like ME, that's fine, but they need to realise that those differences must be respected. I don't force my religion or beliefs on anyone else, and they should do the same. THe problem is most of them cant grasp that, and feel that they have the devine right to force their ideology and religious beliefs and laws on everyone else. Not true, and they don't.

Generally people on the left are more apt to fight for those who are oppressed, while those on the right are generally more apt to do the oppressing, with some exceptions. I lean very far left, but I also realise that leaning too far to either direction leaves an open invitation to corruption and abuses of power. Prime examples of this are Hitler and the fascism of nazi germany, (the far RIGHT) and the Soviet Union. (the far LEFT). Capitalism run rampant, is just as bad as communism run rampant and could likely have (and did have) similar end results, with masses of people being oppressed. Again, point to nazi germany and the Soviet Union as examples. Nazi germany was spun out of rampant capitalism, while the Soviet Union was communism at its worst. And no, nazi germany was not socialist at all. The nazi party used the term socialist in its name to appeal to the masses in order to gain power. Once they gained power, all bets were off and there was nothing socialist about them at all. They were 100% extreme far right wing fascist all the way.

I find it fascinating that most Americans either fail to see, or refuse to acknowledge that the U.S. did have a fairly sizable hand in the rise of nazi germany. Some of the best evidence of this is the fact that the U.S. refused to get involved in the war until it was clear that the USSR was about to crush the nazi movement. Funny that.

My whole point is that if common ground can be found while acknowledge and respecting the differences of BOTH sides, it is possible that the people can succeed and things can get done and real progress can be made. Otherwise, eventually, the fissure is going to crack wide open again, and we will probably have once again a country so severely divided that it could split for a 2nd time.
