sanrene, Tn would do it, if Haslam could. I worked 5 years in a county where they adored their running backs, and viewed entering 10th grade as acquiring higher education . The mayor was a high school grad, whose wife ran a tiny consignment shop, with the Board of Ed no more educated than he. I do not worry about metropolitan areas forgoing education, but little hick towns, there is cause for concern about.
Funny thing is this county is amongst 10% worst statewide in unemployment rate, during good and bad times, but the idiots who live there are too stupid to connect the dots.
I agree with a few, and I mean few, of their proposals. But read your history. Reagan promised to end the Departments of Energy and Education. Some programs, like Social Security and Medicare, enjoy popular support, and are understandably hard to eviscerate. But the DOE and DOE were just created by an unpopular President, should have been easy to cut.
There has been a Dept. of Education since 1867! That is not a typo! It became a cabinet level dept in 1953, under Eisenhower. It became a stand-alone cabinet dept in 1980, under Carter. I have posted links to this before. Anyone interested, disbelieving, etc, can do a search.
I have an idea. how about we just scrap the Constitution altogether and go back to the Articles of Confederation? Maybe then these guys will finally be satisfied and shut up.
Of the ten items referenced, which ones are mentioned in the constitution?
I'd seen this once before and found it again. Here's an 8th grade EXIT test from 1895.
If that test were given today High School seniors couldn't pass it if their life depended on it.
Here's a few snippets from it: 7-10. Write a composition of about 150 words and show therein that you understand the practical use of the rules of grammar. 6. Find the interest of $512.60 for 8 months and 18 days at 7 per cent. 3. What are the following, and give examples of each: Trigraph, Subvocals, Diphthong, Cognate, Linguals? 7. Define the following prefixes and use in connection with a word: Bi, Dis, Mis, Pre, Semi, Post, Non, Inter, Mono, Super 7. Name all the republics of Europe and give the capital of each. 1. Where are the saliva, gastric juice, and bile secreted? What is the use of each in digestion?
Where do you see in the constitution the creation of the DoEnergy, Education, EPA?
See, that's what you don't get - the federal government has grown so far beyond it's original intent and purpose...but you'll never get that...because you believe that government is the solution to everything.
The Constitution was written when the nation was small. We have to adapt to stay competitive.
I agree that there is A LOT of waste, but eliminating some of these departments is asinine. I'm sure we can easily save one trillion dollars if special interests don't get in the way... "if"...
Anyone that believes we did fine during the Industrial Revolution is kidding themselves and completely ignorant of the most basic American history. Yikes!

And I"ve seen this debunked. This was not an 8th grade exit test, it is thought to be a qualifying test for teachers. (Links on the ed forum)
Cut the DoD budget by half. Eliminate all social security and medicare for Republicans. Deficit = history.
