Have you traced it? I have Irish blood, do I have to announce it? No, who cares, and why would it matter to anybody else? I am American, and not that proud of it, right now, but that's what I am.
Have I traced what? My African ancestry? Yes. My European ancestry? Yes. My Native ancestry? Yes.
No one "announces" anything. We use these terms when appropriate or when we are forced to document them on the various forms we feel out in our life. No one is asking you to go around town in the streets declaring your heritage.
You say a lot when you say you are not too proud of being American right now. I don't even have a lot of understanding for a comment like that. Sorry, but I am pretty proud to be a citizen of this country.
OK, I'm confused. You're telling me that a BLACK PERSON doesn't have direct ancestry from Africa? I specifically said in my earlier post that I am talking about people who are American and have ancestry from Africa can be called African-American. How does Black person (a person of African ancestry) not have close bloodties to Africa?
I consider myself to be pretty good with geneaology, geography and biology, so please explain to me what you are trying to make a point out of.
I could understand if you were saying the other-way-around: Not every African-American is Black.
I know South African descendents and we found it interesting how we could call them African-Americans and it would be very valid.
African-American is for those black people with roots in America; it doesn't cover black Americans from the West Indies, Africa, etc. Hence not every black person in the United States is "African-American".
What? I'm sorry, but I disagree. My understanding is that African-American is used in common-day United States of American to describe Black people because they have roots and ancestry from Africa.
That would go for those in the West Indies and Africa as well who lived here.
After reading innumerable threads and comments regarding racial self-identification, lack of assimilation, and screeds about multiculturalism I thought to myself why is it that I've never read a thread or comment advocating the ending of the classification referred to as white? I mean if African American is so offensive because of its alleged inaccuracy then why not do a way with the term white, after all, white people are exactly white or anything close to it. So, in the hopes of bringing about that much touted color blind society, I would like to make the following offer.
Do away with the idea or whiteness and I will stop identifying myself as an African American and ask others to do the same.
What do you think?
I dont consider myself white, even though that is what I am. I consider myself a human being that is american, and that everyone bleeds red.
when I got my purple heart in 1991, I did not care if the blood that was given to me came from a white, black, yellow or green human, I just cared that it helped me live.
I know plenty of people that consider themselves african american, but I also know quite a few that consider themselves to be black as well.
what you consider yourself is up to you, as you are the human being that has to live with the name.
Have I traced what? My African ancestry? Yes. My European ancestry? Yes. My Native ancestry? Yes.

For the first time in my adult life, I am not proud of my country. I say that because of what we have done to Libya, co-conspirators in genocide and the torture and killing of many, including their leader. We have wrought death of destruction to Libya, with more regime changes planned. We are creating enemies, and a world less safe for everyone. This is a very bleak time in America's history - not sure we will ever recover. Might does not make right.
Anyone that identifies with Africa, should be very concerned about what we are doing there.
I liked the idea of choosing other for the forms, here's a link to nationalities and what they are know as, this will sure show those forms people a horse of a different color
Well let's make it a race and then we don't have to worry about "race" anymore.
One can always check "other" and fill in whatever they want for the race question you see on forms.
I'll go with that
