SAN DIEGO — A U.S. Marines drill instructor has been charged with 224 counts of abusing recruits, a Marines spokesman said Thursday.

Sgt. Jerrod M. Glass postponed making a plea during a court appearance at San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot, where he worked, said spokesman Austin Mansfield. The charges include 91 counts of assault, 89 of failure to obey lawful orders and 27 of cruelty and maltreatment.

Glass had worked as a drill sergeant for less than a year when the alleged mistreatment occurred in January and February. No member of his platoon was seriously injured.

Ahh yes, the "new" military-are they serious? 224 counts of abuse, and not ONE serious injury--sounds like this guy was derelict in his duties as a marine drill instructor---there should have been a FEW serious injuries, at least.
I joined the military in '67. In boot camp I was standing beside a guy as a CPO broke a clip-board in two over his head--then made the poor slob do push-ups for "breaking government property"...I saw guys slammed against bulkheads, thrown to the "deck", and made to sing "Anchors Aweigh" at full volume with a bucket over their heads, for the most trivial of reasons--or just a bad mood. I saw drunk instructors route the "maggots" at 2AM, just to take them outside and have a little "fun"..
And this was in the NAVY---we were SISSIES compared to the poor lost souls housed just across the canal in MARINE boot camp--THERE they REALLY built men!!
--I don't know--I'm having a little trouble with this---All this abuse, yet no injuries---hmmmm. What happens when they're in combat and end up being taken prisoner---do we sue the enemy prison guards---I hear some of them can be really insensitive, and really aren't "people-persons" at all....
