Like or not political parties expect loyalty, especially from one of the leaders. The general rule is that if you can't support a particular candidate, especially for President/Vice-President, and they haven't advocated something crazy like repeal of the 13th Amendment, you keep your mouth shut. And you certainly don't endorse the opponent. Not if you want to remain a leader in the party.

As a counterpoint look what the Democrats, and many of the liberals posting in this very thread, did to and said about Lieberman when he supported McCain. The only difference ws that Lieberman had an office to defend and Powell didn't.

It's the height of hypocrisy to ***** about the Republicans ignoring and ditching Powell while the Democrats did the exact same thing to Lieberman with much more official vitriol.

A note: Rush Limbaugh is not now , nor ever has been, a Republican Party official or officeholder. First and foremost he's an entertainer who lives and dies by ratings. At one time he was a rock 'n' roll DJ.

Actually he is, whenever you have the power to have the RNC chairman removed through rhetoric and verbal attacks you are a republican powerhouse! You may not be an official (why would you want to be anyway?) when you can control them indirectly?

I agree, it is a mistake to say that Powell's support for Obama was based on race. I doubt that there is really any evidence to support it, so it's example of 'making stuff up.'

Read Powell's books--he has never been an ideologue. His operating principle is more oriented towards excellence and accomplishment than ideology. That's why he could work for the Reagan, HW Bush, and W Bush admins, and then turn around and endorse Obama. His other major operating principle is internecine DC infighting. He plays that game with gusto, and he always wants to win (and usually does). I don't think it matters to him a whit what the ideological ramifications of these battles are.

Nice spin. People like him, because he served our country with distinction, and he left the Bush administration, when their foolishness became excruciating. I recall that Powell spent a whole afternoon trying to talk Bush out of invading Iraq.

I do think he destroyed his presidential possibility with his false statements, but that does not mean he was widely loathed.

Frankly, I am far more disappointed with Condaleeza Rice. She was much more intelligent than Bush, and he respected her judgment. However, she was such a straight A kiss ass, she did not save him from himself. She is smart, but lacked intellectual courage and independence.

Powell stumbled, but he has tried to reclaim his good name as a sensible moderate. That is heresy these days, but you would be dead wrong if you think Democrats do not respect intelligent, principled moderates. The left is fawning all over Alan Simpson these days, because he seems to think about the consequences of what he says.

Conservatives, why do you hate our soldiers who don't vote for YOUR candidates? Why do you feel the need to lie and slander them (or support those that do) when they put their lives on the line for your sorry butts when most of you didn't do it yourself? I think your love for our men and women in uniform is a sham and conditional based on your political views.
Sorry, you cannot paint all people with the same brush like that and expect people to think that you are a credible person. It is not correct to assume that conservatives hate our soldiers who don't vote for conservative candidates.

Well then why don't conservatives denounce those who do? It does make you wonder if silence is actually approval.

Colin Powell is clearly in touch with America public opinion. We are tuning out of MSM "hate rhetoric" since the Tucson shootings. It is beyond belief, the media and politicos supporting violence and hate in this country.

No conservative, moderate or not, would ever vote for the socialist leaning Obama. Especially against a moderate conservative like McCain! No, Powell is either a liberal or chose to vote for race over politics.

lol and SOME of us may be registered repub but vote Dem or Indep...far right was never good at predicting people, and they have no clue of the sentiments going on regarding the economy right now.

Food and shelter/quality of life trumps ideology every time. A basic fact the far right haters cannot comprehend.
