Cancer
1,399,790 new cases in 2006 (does not include any previous year) I wonder how many cancers are out there not included in that data?

I've already shown the diabetes figures...20.8 millon.

Alcoholism Treatment in the United States An Overview - some 14 million Americans have an alcohol problem; treatment efforts are described Alcohol Research & Health - Find Articles

According to the 1992 National Longitudinal Alcohol Epidemiologic Survey, a national household survey, approximately 7.5 percent of the U.S. population (about 14 million Americans) abuse and/or are dependent on alcohol
This one is VERY hard to nail since AA does NOT disclose membership. And many more alcoholics do not seek treatment.

So yes, it does add up to more, but it seems that overweight/obesity is the last politically correct group to bash. Liz

It seems diversity and tolerance is limited to one segment of society. Some people look great with a few extra pounds.

I had a friend who's daughter was very bigoted against people who were heavy. Every conversation was dotted with some comment about fat people. You could not watch TV without her saying "ohh that person is fat". I finally had enough and told her to get her whining speed taking binge and purge skinny butt out of my house and never come back.

Some people will not resort to drugs or toilet purging to be thin and many teens are driven to this by the media's attack on people that may carry a few pounds extra. Most people would like to be the ideal weight but people come in all sizes and some people LIKE how they are.

Do you actually think obesity just happened, and that is why we're going to be seeing a lot more diabetics in the future?????????

I am new to the forum but I was reading these posts about fat people in this country. I hope that it is ok that I make my post here and if not then please let me know.

I am a retired senior citizen and married. From everything I have seen in this country over the past 60+ years people as of late have gotten to the point of having people to hate and since we have the PC police all over the country, it seems that all that is left to openly hate happens to be smokers and fat people. It is sickening to me. I am sure that most fat people would love to be normal weight and all that happens when the country goes on a fat outing, so to speak, the fat ones tend to get fatter because of the stress put on them from the people who have such inferiority complexes about themselves that they have this intense desire and need to pick on the fat people or smokers, especially if they happen to be reformed smokers. have any of you heard Gov Huckabee talk about fat people, all of this because he had the money and health insurance to help him lose over 100lbs himself. He is like reformed smokers in that he is a reformed fatty. Maybe the people who HATE fat people so much need to take a look at themselves and see what it is about themselves that they hate so much because that is generally what causes people to be so hateful toward other people for whatever reason.

It is true that smoking is not good for a person but in no way does it cause all of the deaths that the government sasy it does. The same goe for fat people.

We get a magazine called "Prevention" each month and it always has very interesting articles concerning health. The September magazine happens to have a small article about being overweight. Here is what it says in part;

"Are you surprised to learn that you can be fit and, to put it indelicately, fat? Many doctors I know are startled to hear this too. But the latest research, out of Louisiana State University, shows that overweight women can improve their heart health by adding just 10 minutes of activity a day.

In that study, researchers asked more than 400 sedentary women with high or borderline-high blood pressure to add a short bout of moderately intense activity, such as brisk walking, to their daily routines for 6 months. Although the women as a group neither lost weight nor lowered their blood pressure, they ended up fitter, as measured by their oxygen intake, and - this is the really important part- their waistlines got smaller. That is significant because belly, or visceral fat is linked to insulin resistance, a contributor to heart disease. You can reach this level of fitness without losing one pound.

Metabolism is the key player here because yo-yo diets do more harm to people who diet than being overweight does. Your metabolism is dictated due in large part to your genes. Canadian researchers have shown, for instance, that when they have total control of identicaltwins' diets and overfeed them, siblings gain nearly the same amount, while there is wide variation among the sets of twins. Given the same food, one pair might gain 1o pounds, and another pair 29 pounds.

Bottom Line: Everyone burns calories at a different rate, which is why some of you will have to struggle mightily to lose weight. But remember: There is more than one way to be healthy. Your ideal weight should be determined by what's going on in the inside- with your HDL, triglycerides, and blood sugar-not only by how you look in the mirror. You should be delighted to know that even if the perfect figure is outside of your grasp, a fir and healthy body is still within reach."

All of that was written by Arthur Agatston, MD, a preventive cardiologist and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the author of The South Beach Diet. He maintains a cardiology practice and research foundation in Miami, Florida.

The people who want to hate fat people or smokers will continue to hate those people and no amount of truth will change their minds. As I said earlier in this diatribe, people who hate others and latch onto the what the MSM tells them do so because they have a need to do so.

Actually, they are the ones who offered to take the tasks instead of training somebody. And if they weren't "happy" doing it, then they should not have volunteered themselves.
they had two choices, they opted to take that choice so they wouldn't have to hire anyone else....so they took your workload...how good of you to do that to them.....sorry, your attitude doesn't hold water...not in the least...it's that kind of attitude which is contribuiting to the demise of our country...people who feel they deserve everything...

However, I failed to see, in your response, an example of a women who took off 6 months to have a baby and get paid for it..
I was wrong, it wasn't 6 months that she got paid for, you were right....
and I was upset...women like you, who feel they deserve something for nothing...which puts a heavier work load on others and thinks that's ok to do....because women liberal groups paid off the right people...so now it's become a culture....and acceptable behavior to most...but when someone takes off for 6 weeks to have a child, her choice to have a child, shouldn't become everyone else's problem. Again...it was either take on your work load, which it doesn't even seem to phase you....or hire another girl and pay her while they are paying you, doesn't seem to make sense, does it...so who suffers from your selfish decission...work and your co workers. I'm angry b/c I've seen what it does to companies and to it's people when a woman take advantage of this....but the laws say, it's ok to do...another perfect example of how corrupt we are becoming. So you get to have off for 6 weeks, with pay, at the expense of all your co workers...sweet.

Obesity is not just "being overweight." Obesity refers to the individuals who's weight is way up there. It causes problems for everybody around them. People used to be mooshed up against the rolls upon rolls of fat that were hanging out of their airplane seat, it is ONE OF THE REASONS (note, I stree the ONE of the MANY reasons) that healthcare is expensive. MRI machines, Hospital beds, blood pressure bands, and special surgical equipment (to get through the mass amounts of fat) have cost Americans millions.
No missy, it is not one of the reasons health care is expensive, your way off base and so ignorantly misinformed. (Have cost Americans millions) Tell me, how many severely obese people do you know personally? Yes there are some that are truly obese, out of the norm...but, not many. And not to the point that it cost us and healthcare and raises our fees. I bet there are wayyyyyyy less obesities...then there are women who are having babies...which, lest I remind you, healthcare pays for to. Healthcare also pays for the millions of visectomies...for viagra...now that's real. Yet, we have women in this country that still feel they have to be married and have children to be taken care of...????? When are we going to educate our children that they can be self supportive and having children doesn't keep a marriage together.

Now, can you see, how truly idiotic your statements are, not to mention, the animosity for human beings that happen to have a problem with their weight. God forbid you should someday, b/c of health reasons, be forced into being inactive...for lets say a year, two years, to 6 years. Then come back and tell me your quality of life, after you have lost the independence and abiltiy to be active and tell me again, how much you loath fat people.

Missy, you've got a lot to learn. I mean no insult, but this is why, this country is in a fix....the mentality of our society is quickly declining, b/c we lack the ability to not only problem solve, but to truly understand, the reality of our own obessions and anger...and fears...so we hate others who are not like us....

and yet, we think it's ok to drain the system, and use others yeilding them with an extra work load, b/c the majority of women libs got it legal...well, leagal or not, it is not acceptable behavior to make your personal problems and choices everyone elses...but, yet, you say, heavy people are creating problems...again, I'll echo what someone else stated...those who are guilty in their own obsessions are the most angry and condiscending of others, especially if the news media makes such untrue statements which makes it ok to hate others....well, let me tell you, each and every person on the face of this earth, is equally at fault, cuz we all own vices...obsessions and/or think we are owed something for no thing. Do you actually think that the media doesn't brain wash people into believing their broadcasts....your listening and reading one person's opinion is all, especially when they make silly statements like Studies show???????

Oh, one thing people seem to forget - under Christian doctrine, gluttony is considered a sin. Being a 'true Christian' seems incompatible with being fat. Whenever I see a fat preacher, I have to laugh, because, yikes, at least practice what your religion claims to preach.
