Where is there any evidence that the free lunch program causes dependency?
Maybe some people mean that the children will develop a dependency on food???? How frightening the thought that there will be a huge number of children thinking food is a necessity.
I'm all for if the schools require something, the school provides it. If the schools are situated in such a way that the kids can't walk home for lunch, then give everybody lunch.
Just stop serving the same ol sugar, salt, white flour and fat laden foods they have been serving for the last 40 years. I did not permit my kids to eat that crap. They took their lunch or I went to the school and took them out.
I'll be very happy to increase my taxes to serve a decent breakfast and lunch if the churches who declare children to be a gift from God and birth control is a sin will ante up, too.

Well, maybe in the 1950s and 1960s it was assumed that a kid can walk home at lunchtime and have mom provide a meal. Those days are largely gone except in affluent communities that probably aren't eligible for free lunch.
I think in a country where we coddle the rich and one party wants to lower taxes on the rich even more, it's morally offensive to consider cutting free lunch programs, that go mainly to the under privileged, that cost a mere $11 billion a year.
Several studies have been done that show in many instances, families come out better if one parent stays home. My own DH did such a study when he was a long range planner for a Fortune 100 company who employed lots of women. When child care, transportation, clothes and dinner are factored in, there is not that much gain in moms working. Unless they make a bunch of money.
We came up short when 2 kids were in college and I started rehabbing houses. I controlled my own time and could take care of the kids.
Like I said, kids can no longer walk home for lunch like I did, so let the school provide it to every student.
I'm fine with defunding the military. One recent study published indicated that defense gets 54% of federal receipts. That would provide education and healthcare for all of us. And then some.

Yes,I am too...not the troops, but the defense contractors who are rip offs from the ground up.
Another microscopic part of the budget to be eliminated: stop feeding the animals at the National Zoo. I hear they also feed some animals in National Parks. Get them off the Federal Feedbag. There ought to be thousands of dollars there.

Well why not just start feeding the children to the animals.. Win, win. Two birds with one stone. Think of the money that we would save.
