They can't afford to not be a US welfare state.

Yes, cut them loose. Off the USA teet.

All we need is for Ron Paul to get the lead, and we would get rid of a lot of waste.

Does it want to be its own nation and not be subsidized by the US taxpayers?

Puerto Rico political status: Puerto Rico residents to vote again on island's political status - OrlandoSentinel.com

Quote:
Puerto Rico residents will vote in a non-binding referendum next year on whether to pursue a change in the island's political status as a U.S. territory. A bill recently approved by the Puerto Rico Legislature and signed by the governor would allow voters to say whether they want to keep their current relationship with the U.S. — described as "territorial" — or seek a change.

The referendum would play out in two parts. In the first part, voters would cast ballots in August 2012, answering whether they want a change in status

If a majority said yes, voters could choose one of three options in a November referendum: statehood, independence or a "free associated state." The latter refers to a sovereign nation that would have to agree with the U.S. to relinquish some of its powers in exchange for benefits such as defense or emergency assistance.

Congress would have to act for any change to take effect.

I doubt Puerto Ricans will be okay with that.

Either become a full-fledged state, or sovereign nation. If you let them decide, unless they're the most altruistic group of people on earth, they would be insane to change their current situation. Off the top of my head, they've been given this choice in different forms or fashions multiple times and choose to keep the status quo.

Let Puerto Ricans decide. The only options should be full-fledged independence or full-fledged US Statehood.

They don't want to be a state, but they want the benefits of being one. I don't understand why they don't just break away. What is the benefit to us for keeping it a territory, other than Americans not having to exchange currency when traveling to a resort? Let 'em go already.
