Today, the single biggest barrier to voting in this country is our antiquated registration system. According to the Census Bureau, of the 75 million adult citizens who failed to vote in the last presidential election, 60 million of them were not registered and, therefore, not eligible to cast a ballot.
All eligible citizens can and should be automatically registered to vote. The ability to vote is a right – it is not a privilege. Under our current system, many voters must follow cumbersome and needlessly complex voter registration rules. And every election season, state and local officials have to manually process a crush of new applications – most of them handwritten – leaving the system riddled with errors, and, too often, creating chaos at the polls.
Fortunately, modern technology provides a straightforward fix for these problems – if we have the political will to bring our election systems into the 21st century. It should be the government’s responsibility to automatically register citizens to vote, by compiling – from databases that already exist – a list of all eligible residents in each jurisdiction
Where are they needed and why? Get a clue Roy, on what the voter suppression is about. Or is it that you agree, "them people don't know how to vote right".
bob, are you talking about black people, poor people or just Democrats? Do you know who runs every election in every state? It is not the US government since the states hold the votes for even US candidates although only one of those people is running on a general vote of all the people.
Holder is going to get this one in his face since he can't get it into the Supreme Court before November and the important election will have come and gone before they rule.
Seriously, don't you think that most voters have cards and don't you know that states that are requiring them are providing ways for poor people to get the IDs without having to pay what you would call a "poll" tax. I think that even old people like me who have been voting in the same precinct building for over 40 years with judges who have known me all that time should have to show a photo ID. Of course, I am neither black or Democrat. Maybe a little poor, but not bad.
republicans dont care about honest and fair elections. wake up. its a pure political play with the changing demos. they know who has id and who doesnt.

there was a great article about a white senior in wisconsin who will have to pay essentially a poll tax to vote, since they didnt record home births in the 20's in wisconsin
Holder said the people who talked about your kind of suppression were racists though. He has even called anyone who is after him on the F & F thing racists. I guess we are "poorests" or something.
I'm not sure how to respond. Fair elections are one of the cornerstone principles of a free society. Why anyone from either party would oppose voter id's escapes me.
Everybody knows why Democrats and unions don't want fair elections these days.
In Ohio it cost $8.50 to get a state I D, it is free to get a social security card, and a copy of BC if you lost original is $21.50. If voting is that important to a person let them spend 30 bucks or less to have ID. The only reason {D}s are against is they lose some of their base.
