Why do we help reconstruct areas that don't want us there? for example, we obliterated Iraq and Afghanistan (people who didn't like us even before the war) and we pick up the pieces after we "make our presence known"
Wouldn't a more affordable, effective way to fight a war be to go in "guns a-blazing" and not do reconstructive work? To be honest we fought this war for a reason (no, not oil liberals ) and to reconstruct kinda defeats the purpose
Think of it like this...... If America was attacked by a middle eastern country and somehow won..... do you think they would help us?
Mainly for two reasons. 1) So the people of the country doesn't feel like the US is simply there to intrude and are against the nations as a whole. By "rebuilding" the country, it give off the impression they are there to help the people to make their nation a better place while overthrowing their leaders.
2) And the main reason, private contractors can make a killing at doing this work and send the massive bills to the taxpayer.

never understood why the privately contracted that sort of stuff..... isnt it more expensive?
For the taxpayer. The contractors make up all kinds of outrageous fees like charging the government $1,000 a week to rent a screwdriver or $10,000 for an airport luggage cart. All paid for out of our pockets.
It's what we did in Germany and Japan, and it worked out rather well. I don't remember ever hearing anyone whining about that. You don't hear people whining about Bosnia, for that matter.
But anyway, you do raise a good point. I think that if we fight any more mid east wars in the near future, there is going to be zero appetite for nation-building. I always thought that the way Reagan handled Libya should be the model. If you hit us, we'll send a few missiles your way and see how you like it. It appeared to work with Khadafy--it kept him in his box for 25 years.
