We all know how every Republican out there likes to compare themselves to the popular president Ronald Reagan, but would any Republican consider Eisenhower to be a model Republican? Under Eisenhower our government pushed for all kinds of social programs, including infrastructure, social security, education, desegregation. Sure he was a bit of a war president with the Korean war and all but he pushed for a better America.
Given that a few years ago we had the bridge collapse in MN and our infrastructure overall got rated a "D", I think we need BOTH a president and congress that focus more on the physical and economic aspect of government. I think we have the bailouts approached the wrong way, where a good chunk of money went into the personal accounts of CEO's instead expansion businesses and products. Too much focus is being put on Tax Cuts, Deficit, Abortion, Religion, and the War on Terror. What about innovation, restoration, and expansion?
Republicans keep talking about keeping money in the hands of the "Job Creators" but when are we going to some job creation? When are we going to see some education for the innovators for the 21st century? When are we going to see jobs that helps rebuild America from it's "D" rated infrastructure?
When are we gonna see Republicans emulate Ike, rather than Reagan?
I doubt we'll ever see that from the current crop of both Republicans, if anything they'd call Ike a socialist, the Devil, left-wing scum, etc.
I understand the tax rate was pretty damn high for the corporations, but his policies and what he focused on during his term are pretty close to what we need to focus on now.
Eisenhower couldn't run as a Republican these days. They'd deride him as a radical liberal communist.
I know they would, but he still ran as a republican and won by 57% of the popular vote.
Why did the republicans switch their ideals in such a big way from Eisenhower to Reagan if our nation was clearly pretty damn prosperous with the Republican ideals from way back then? Why does the republican base turn away from the key issues that Eisenhower tackled and now focus on Corporations and Religion? Can some republican tell me what went wrong with Eisenhower's republican platform and why we have today's republican platform being what it is?
Eisenhower when he was a general in WW2 helped liberate the concentration camps, and he was the one who said "film this otherwise the world will never believe it".
He was smart enough to know most people wouldn't comphrend what happened without proof.
There are no more Eisenhowers or JFKs around these days.
